Alvernia Downs Cabrini, 4-1

Radnor, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2023) - Alvernia University (3-4) scored four unanswered goals to defeat Cabrini University (3-4-2) by a 4-1 decision on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Cabrini.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Cabrini took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Dominic Petruzzelli. But, Alvernia responded just under two minutes later as Ryan Cogill found Gabe Wunderlich to even the game up at 1-1.

Wunderlich then netted his second of the afternoon in the 36th minute to give Alvernia a 2-1 lead. Alvernia carried that lead into the half.

Alvernia then took a 3-1 lead in the opening minute of the second half as the Cavaliers scored an own-goal off their own defender.

Alvernia held the two goal lead for the next 33 minutes until Evan Case connected with Justin Fetrow to give Alvernia the 4-1 lead with just over 11 minutes to play.

Cabrini had three shots on goal - including a penalty kick - in the final 11 minutes, but Alvernia's Evan Solley stopped all three to preserve the 4-1 win.

Solley finished the afternoon with five saves. Wunderlich led Alvernia's offense with two goals. Following his assist on Alvernia's first goal, Cogill has now recorded a point in all seven of Alvernia's games this season. Fetrow's goal is his fifth goal in the last five games.

The win for Alvernia marked the final time the Golden Wolves and Cavaliers will meet as Cabrini will be closing its doors at the conclusion of the academic year.

Alvernia has a midweek break and is back in action on Saturday at Stevenson to open its MAC Commonwealth schedule.
