Alvernia Scores Six Straight to Power Past Wilkes, 6-1

Six Different Players Score for Alvernia

Wilkes, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2023) - After Wilkes University (1-1) took an early 1-0 lead, Alvernia University (1-2) scored six unanswered to take a 6-1 win over the Colonels and pick up its first win of the season on Thursday night in non-conference field hockey action at Wilkes.

Following a 45 minute weather delay and a scoreless first quarter, Wilkes broke the 0-0 tie just 30 seconds into the second frame after Caitlin Keim settled the ball in traffic and snuck a shot into goal just inside the right post.

Just over two minutes later, Alvernia was awarded a penalty stroke after a Wilkes foul. Abbie Buck stepped up to take the shot for the Golden Wolves and fired towards the left side of the net. The Wilkes goalie dove with the shot, but was not in time as Buck put Alvernia on the board and tied the game up at 1-1.

Alvernia then took the 2-1 lead with four minutes to play in the first half as Alvernia's Hailey Miller gained control within a crowd in front of the net and was able to tap the ball into goal just off the right post.

Alvernia held Wilkes to just one shot on goal in the first half as the Golden Wolves took the 2-1 lead into the break.

After a back and forth first ten minutes of the second half, Alvernia was awarded its second penalty stroke of the night. This time, Kathryn Palmer stepped up to take the attempt for Alvernia. Palmer sent it up and inside the left post, and just out of the reach of the diving goal, to give Alvernia the 3-1 advantage.

Then, in the final seconds of the third quarter, Ava Michael connected with Rori Caulfield as Caulfield powered a shot past the goalie to give Alvernia the 4-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Alvernia kept it rolling in the fourth as Miller crossed a pass in front of the goal to a waiting Katelyn Goodwin off the left post. Goodwin then tapped it in for her first collegiate goal with 11 minutes remaining to give Alvernia the 5-1 lead.

The Golden Wolves closed it out with one more goal in the final two minutes as Miller hit a quick and short pass to Keleigh Clausius and Clausius tapped it in for Alvernia's sixth and final goal of the game.

Miller finished with a goal and two assists to lead the Golden Wolves. Alvernia's defense allowed just one shot on goal on the night as Lexi Boettcher picked up the win in net for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action at home on Saturday hosting Haverford at 1:00 PM.
