Nazareth Scores Three Unanswered in 4-1 Win Over Alvernia

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2024) - #15 Nazareth University scored three unanswered to take a 4-1 win over Alvernia University on Friday night in UCHC women's ice hockey action at Body Zone.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the second period, the Golden Flyers scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with just under five minutes to play in the second period. Nazareth then added two more for the 4-1 win. 

With the loss, Alvernia drops to 8-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in UCHC play. The Golden Flyers improve to 8-5-1 overall and 8-0-1 in UCHC play.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Flyers opened the scoring just 1:24 into the game with Nazareth's Alexis Kindred finding the back of the net to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 advantage.
  • Alvernia had a power play opportunity midway through the first period, but could not convert.
  • The Golden Wolves held Nazareth at bay the rest of the period, but the Golden Flyers held Alvernia to just two shots on goal during the period as Nazareth took the 1-0 lead into the second period.
  • The Golden Wolves evened it up at 1-1 on a power play goal 3:26 into the second. Sydney Bradley and Amber Steinhilpert found Sikke Ask posted up in front of the goalie, and Ask deflected it in for the equalizer. 
  • Alvernia then survived a 5v3 power play for the Golden Flyers to keep the game tied at 1-1 as the period approached its midpoint.
  • The Golden Flyers then found success on the power play and broke the 1-1 tie with just under five minutes to play in the period when Nazareth's Meredith Boettcher snuck one past Alvernia goalie Juliana Rodgers.
  • Three and a half minutes later, the Golden Flyers scored another power play goal with Nikki Sharp scoring off the rebound to give Nazareth the 3-1 lead.
  • Both teams traded power plays in the early minutes of third period, but the Golden Flyers were the ones to take advantage and tack one onto the lead to make it a 4-1 game as Allie Zack fired it between the pads of Rodgers.
  • The Golden Wolves had a 5v3 opportunity of their own late in the period, but Alvernia could not get any back as Nazareth came away with the 4-1 win.

  • Ask, Steinhilpert, and Bradley each finished with a point for the Golden Wolves.
  • Rodgers finished with 33 saves in goal for Alvernia
  • Lexi Hooper had a team-high two blocks, and Ask led Alvernia with four faceoff wins.
  • Alvernia was held to 13 shots on goal to Nazareth's 37.

  • Three of Nazareth's four goals came on a power play. Prior to tonight, Alvernia had allowed three power play goals all season.
  • Rodgers' 33 saves was a season and career-high for the sophomore
