Golden Wolves Drop Tight Contest to King’s, 3-2

Reading, Pa (January 27, 2024) - Alvernia University (11-7-2, 9-6-1) netted two third period goals but it was not enough as King's College (8-11-0, 7-7-0) grabbed the 3-2 victory Saturday night in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup at BodyZone. 

The Monarch's held a 1-0 lead after two periods of play, the Golden Wolves tied the game up early in the third but King's equalized within the minute and then tallied an empty net goal in the final two minutes to make it 3-1. Alvernia netted one with 24 seconds left but could not find the leveler as the Monarchs took the 3-2 victory to secure the series split with Alvernia. 

How it Happened 
  • A scoreless first period was highlighted by the Golden Wolves recorded more than double King's shots on goal with Alvernia recording 19 to King's eight but Matt Bidini saved all 19 to send the game into the first intermission locked at zero. 
  • King's struck first midway through the second period when Kent Lee assisted Ethan Hersant to make it a 1-0 game with just under 12 minutes to go in the period.
  • The Golden Wolves would fire 21 shots at the King's net in the final 12 minutes of the second period with 11 going on net but Bidini saved all 11 to send it into the final intermission with King's leading 1-0. 
  • Alvernia found an equalizer 59 seconds in the final period after Christian Dahl sent the puck across the blue line to Logan vande Meerakker who fired the puck toward goal, Vincent Servizzi was waiting on the post and directed the puck past Bidini and into the back of the net to tie the game at one. 
  • The Monarchs responded almost immediately when Hersant tallied his second of the game just under a minute later to regain the lead, 2-1 King's. 
  • King's made it 3-1 with 1:38 left in the third period when Aaron Frenkel found the empty Alvernia net. 
  • The Golden Wolves made a late push to find a leveler when Frazer Dodd lit the lamp in the final 30 seconds of the game after assists from Servizzi and Sean Kenny to make it 3-2. 
  • Alvernia recorded four shots in the final ten seconds of the game, one was denied by the pipe and the three others were saved by Bidini to secure the 3-2 victory for the Monarchs. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • King's goalie Matt Bidini recorded 62 saves in net. 
  • Alvernia's Jackson Fellner tallied 19 saves. 
  • Vincent Servizzi led the Golden Wolves with a goal and an assist and is Servizzi's second multipoint game of the season. 
  • Captain Logan vande Meerakker's assist marks the 16th game this season he has recorded a point and has tallied a point in eight of his last ten games. 
  • Christian Dahl's assist is his third of the year and Sean Kenny tallied a point in his second straight game after a three point performance last night.

Of Note 
  • King's evened the overall series at two apiece with the victory. 
  • Alvernia and King's are battling for playoff spots heading into the home stretch of the season with Alvernia sitting in 4th place and King's in 5th after tonight's results.
