Alvernia Takes 2-0 Win Over FDU-Florham

Madison, NJ (Oct. 1, 2024) - Alvernia Women's Soccer (4-6-1) used a goal in the second minute of action to set the tone early and power past FDU-Florham (6-5), 2-0, on Tuesday night in non-conference women's soccer action at FDU-Florham.

With the win, Alvernia improved to 4-6-1 and will enter conference play on Saturday going 2-1-1 over its last week of action.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia needed just 1:57 of game time to get on the board. Olivia Swartz found Tayler Flaherty about 25 yards out coming up the middle of the field. Flaherty settled the ball about 15 yards out from the goal, and ripped a shot past both her defender and the goalkeeper and into the left post for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Devils outshot Alverina 13-5 - including 5-3 on goal - the remainder of the first half, but Alvernia's defense held strong and took the 1-0 lead going into the half.
  • FDU had the first look on goal of the second half in the 59th minute, but Brynn Bock made the save for the Golden Wolves to keep it a 1-0 game.
  • As Alvernia transitioned up the field off that shot, Haley Dougherty was given space by her defenders in Alvernia's offensive zone. She had enough space to fire in a shot from over 25 yards out, and that shot found its way into the upper left corner of the goal to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead with just over 30 minutes to play.
  • The Devils pressured Alvernia from there, but FDU struggled to send shots in on goal as most of their attempts were off target. FDU outshot Alvernia 18-4 in the second half, but only five shots were on goal. Bock stopped all five on net - including two on goal in the final ten minutes - to secure Alvernia's third shutout win of the season.
