Golden Wolves Drop Conference Opener to Spartans, 3-1

York, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2024) - York College (7-2-3, 1-0) scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 win over Alvernia University (4-7-1, 0-1) in the MAC Commonwealth opener on Saturday afternoon in women's soccer action at York.

The Golden Wolves took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 13th minute. The Spartans tied it eight minutes later, and scored two more in the second half, for the 3-1 win. With the exception of Alvernia's goal, the Spartans shutdown the Alvernia offense. Alvernia was held to just one more shot on goal the rest of the way, and did not have a look on goal in the final 45 minutes.

How it Happened
  • The Spartans came out of the gates fast and peppered Alvernia early. York sent in three shots, including one on goal, in the opening seven minutes of action.
  • Alvernia had its first opportunity in the 13th minute when the Golden Wolves were awarded a corner opportunity. Haley Dougherty took the corner for Alvernia from the left side of the field. She sent in a good ball that York's keeper jumped up to grab. But, the ball sailed through her hands and into the net to give Alvernia the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans took the ensuing kickoff back into Alvernia territory and maintained steady possession on that side of the field. The Spartans sent in two more shots at Brynn Bock in net for Alvernia, but Bock kept York off the board. York broke through in the 21st minute as York's Meg Kalthof got by an Alvernia defender and snuck a shot past the right side of Bock to even the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute.
  • Bock worked to keep the pressuring Spartans from taking the lead the remainder of the half. She made five more saves to send the game into the half at 1-1.
  • The Spartans picked up where they left off to open the second half, pressuring the Alvernia defense and Bock, who made another save in the 55th minute.
  • Alvernia then fouled York in the box to give the Spartans a penalty kick opportunity in the 68h minute. York's Megan Joyce converted the opportunity to give York the 2-1 advantage.
  • York added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as Kalthof recorded her second of the afternoon for the Spartans to make it a 3-1 game.
Inside the Box Score
  • York outshot Alvernia 26-4 overall and 17-2 on goal. It is the second straight game Alvernia has allowed 25 or more shots and ten or more shots on goal. York also had the edge in corner opportunities, 9-2.
  • Dougherty's goal was her third of the season and it was her second game in a row with a goal.
  • Bock recorded a season-high 14 saves. It marked her most saves in a game since she made a career-high 16 against Montclair in the 2023 season-opener.
