Women’s Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Win at William Paterson

Wayne, NJ (Oct. 8, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-7-1) wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 win over William Paterson (5-4-4) on Tuesday night in non-conference action at William Paterson's Pioneer Park.

Olivia Malone scored in the 12th minute for the Golden Wolves, and that goal proved to be enough as Alvernia fended off the Pioneers the rest of the way for the 1-0 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia had the first look on goal of the game as Victoria Conway sent in a shot that was saved by William Paterson's Emma Timochko in the third minute. Tayler Flaherty had another look on goal for the Golden Wolves five minutes later, but that attempt was also saved.
  • Alvernia maintained steady position for the next few minutes and the Golden Wolves were awarded a corner kick opportunity in the 12th minute. Haley Dougherty sent in the ball from the far corner and Abigail Sargent flicked it back to Malone. Malone then finished the ball off with a shot between the far post and the keeper to put Alvernia on the board, 1-0.
  • Alvernia did not have another shot on goal the remainder of the first half. Brynn Bock made a save in the 24th minute on William Paterson's only shot on goal of the half to keep Alvernia in front, 1-0.
  • The Pioneers upped the pressure in the second half, outshooting Alvernia 9-3 overall and 5-2 on goal. But, Bock and Alvernia's defense held strong to maintain the 1-0 lead through the final horn.
Inside the Box Score
  • Olivia Malone led Alvernia with her first goal since October of 2022. Haley Dougherty and Abigail Sargent finished with an assist apiece. It marks the third straight game Dougherty has recorded at least one point.
  • Bock finished with six saves for her fifth in and fourth shutout of the year.
Of Note
  • Tonight's game marked the first matchup between the Pioneers and Golden Wolves since 2005. William Paterson won that meeting, 2-0.
Up Next
  • Tonight was Alvernia's final non-conference game of the season. The Golden Wolves return to conference play on Friday night hosting Albright. The Lions are 1-7-1, but have one game between tonight and Friday night. Alvernia tied the Lions 0-0 in 2022 and defeated the Lions 2-0 in 2023.
