Lions Down Golden Wolves in Five Sets

Reading, Pa (October 1, 2024) - Alvernia University (8-7, 0-2) dropped a five set MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball matchup to Albright College (12-3, 1-1) 3-2, Tuesday night at Albright. 

The Lions took a 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets 25-19, 25-23 before Alvernia took sets three and four 25-13, 25-23 to send it to a deciding fifth set. The Lions then took the fifth set 15-7 to secure the 3-2 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

How it Happened
  • The Lions took the lead early in the first set of the evening, jumping out to a 5-1 lead after the first six points and then added to the lead heading to the middle of the first set, holding an 11-4 advantage. Both the Golden Wolves and the Lions traded points back and forth with the Lions continuing to hold their seven point, 20-13 lead. Kayleigh Kehler tallied two kills during the stretch for the Golden Wolves and both Allison Wolf and Lindsay Ferguson recorded kills. The Golden Wolves ended the set on a 6-5 scoring run but it was not enough as the Lions took the first set 25-19. 
  • Alvernia and Albright started the second set out trading the first ten points before the Golden Wolves grabbed a five point, 12-7 lead. Cierra Roberts hammered home five kills for the Golden Wolves during the stretch. The Lions then ripped off a 10-4 scoring run to swing the lead in their favor, 17-16 to force an Alvernia timeout. The Golden Wolves battled against the Lions but it was not enough as Albright held on and grabbed the second set 25-23. 
  • Alvernia were the ones to take the lead early in the third set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead before the Lions fought back to make it 10-9. The Golden Wolves then caught fire and never looked back in the third set. Alvernia ripped off a 15-4 scoring run to end the third set 25-13 and make it a 2-1 match. Roberts added two kills, Hailey McDevitt added two more and Wolf and Kehler tallied kills as well for Alvernia. 
  • The Golden Wolves and Lions went back and forth again at the start of the fourth set as the set was tied at 11 midway through. Alvernia then recorded another scoring run, this one an 8-4 stretch that gave the Golden Wolves a four point, 19-15 advantage late in the set. McDevitt, Kehler and Julianna McGlone all tallied two kills during the stretch. Albright then responded with a 7-3 scoring run of its own but the Golden Wolves recorded three of the final four points of the set thanks to a Roberts kill to take the second set 25-23 and send the match to the deciding fifth set. 
  • The Lions controlled the deciding set from the start, jumping out to a 8-3 lead to force an Alvernia timeout. The Lions then ended the set on a 7-4 scoring run that secured the 15-7 victory in the fifth set and also secured the 3-2 victory in the match. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Kayleigh Kehler led the way for the Golden Wolves offensively with ten kills, 28 digs, one block and one ace. 
  • Cierra Roberts hammered home ten kills, Julianna McGlone tallied 22 digs, three assists and two aces. 
  • Hailey McDevitt recorded a team high 35 assists, added nine kills, 13 digs and one block.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Elizabethtown for a tri-match with the Blue Jays and Wilkes. Alvernia's matches are set for 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
