Golden Wolves Go 1-1 at Elizabethtown Tri-Match

Elizabethtown, Pa (October 5, 2024) - Alvernia University (9-8) went 1-1 on Saturday in a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match with Elizabethtown and Wilkes at Elizabethtown. 

The Golden Wolves took down the Colonels 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 to take the first match of the day 3-0, but Alvernia then dropped the second match of the day to the host Blue Jays, 3-0.

How it Happened 
  • The Golden Wolves came out hot at the start of the first set and jumped out to a 12-5 lead and forced a Wilkes timeout Julianna McGlone and Olvia Rohrbaugh both tallied two kills with four other Golden Wolves recording a kill during the stretch. 
  • The Colonels responded with an 8-4 scoring run to pull within three, but the Golden Wolves bounded back with a 9-4 scoring run that was capped off by a Hailey McDevitt ace to secure the first set, 25-17. Allie Evangelista put down two kills during the run and Allison Wolf added another as the Golden Wolves took a 1-0 lead.
  • The Colonels and the Golden Wolves battled back and forth to start the second set but Alvernia held a slight lead, 12-10. McDevitt hammered home two kills and Wolf and Lindsay Ferguson both tallied kills as well.
  • Alvernia stretched the lead to seven after a 9-4 run made it 21-14 and forced Wilkes into taking a timeout to settle things. Although Wilkes came out of the timeout and ended the set on a 5-4 scoring run, it was not enough as the Golden Wolves secured the set two victory thanks to a Ferguson kill from Marli Emrich to make it 25-19 and push Alvernia's lead to 2-0. 
  • The Golden Wolves took yet another early lead in the third set, a 11-7 lead thanks to three kills by Rorhbaugh and two from McGlone but Wilkes leveled the score at 15 after an 8-4 scoring stretch. The Golden Wolves and the Colonels battled back and forth, trading the next 12 points scored to tie the set at 21 late. Alvernia then capped off the third set with four straight points and took the final set 25-21 thanks to a set sealing ace from Patricia Falar and secured the 3-0 victory.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia continued to stay hot in the first set of the second match of the day, jumping out to an 8-2 lead but the Blue Jays responded with a 13-5 scoring stretch that swung the lead in their favor, 15-13. Alvernia bounced back with six straight points thanks to two kills from Rohrbaugh and another from Wolf to give the Golden Wolves a 19-15 lead. The scoring stretch was not enough as the Blue Jays ended the first set on a 10-1 run to take the first set 25-20. 
  • The Blue Jays were the ones to come out hot in the second set, taking a commanding 15-3 lead over the Golden Wolves to start the second set. Elizabethtown then ripped off ten of the final 15 points of the set to take the second set 20-8 and take a 2-0 match lead. Kayleigh Kehler led the way with two kills for Alvernia during the set. 
  • Alvernia and Elizabethtown traded points back and forth in the third set before the Golden Wolves tallied back to back points to take a 12-10 lead. The Golden Wolves continued to hold the lead with a 18-16 advantage before the Blue Jays ripped off three straight points to swing the lead in their favor, 19-18 and force an Alvernia timeout. Elizabethtown came out of the timeout and scored six of the final ten points of the set to secure the 25-22 victory in the third set and the 3-0 sweep.
