Alvernia Drops MAC Commonwealth Matchup to Hood, 3-2

Reading, Pa (October 9, 2024) - Alvernia University (9-9, 0-3) dropped a MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball matchup to Hood College (7-11, 1-2) 3-2, Wednesday evening at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

Alvernia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first two sets but the Blazers came roaring back to take the final three sets and secure the 3-2 victory. 

How it Happened 
  • The Blazers grabbed an early lead in the first set, jumping out to a 12-5 lead on the Golden Wolves and forced an early Alvernia timeout. Hood kept tacking on points, scoring six of the next 11 to push the lead to 18-10 before the Golden Wolves came storming back with a 12-4 scoring run of their own to tie the set at 22. Presley Carnes and Hailey McDevitt tallied two kills for Alvernia during the stretch and Cierra Roberts added another. Alvernia then tallied three of the final four points of the set thanks to two Hood errors and a kill by Lindsay Ferguson to take the first set 25-23. 
  • Both teams traded points back and forth to start the second set as the Golden Wolves and the Blazers were tied at nine. The Golden Wolves then tallied a 10-5 scoring run thanks to three kills from Ferguson and two from Allie Evangelista as the Golden Wolves took a 19-14 lead. Alvernia then righted the ship and rattled off six of the final 12 points to secure the set two victory, 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. 
  • Hood were the ones to jump out to the early lead in the third set, grabbing a two point, 12-10 lead. Alvernia pulled it within one thanks to a Ferguson kill but the Blazers then ripped off an 13-7 run to end the set and take the third set 25-18 and grabbed one set back in the match, 2-1. 
  • The Golden Wolves and the Blazers battled back and forth again to start the fourth set and split the first 20 points, the set was tied at ten. Alvernia then recorded a 6-3 run that gave them the three point, 16-13 lead but the Blazers responded with a 12-6 scoring stretch to take the fourth set 25-22 and even the match at two heading to the deciding fifth set. 
  • Alvernia and Hood went point for point to start the fifth set, as the set was locked at ten. McDevitt hammered home three kills for the Golden Wolves and Kayleigh Kehler added two. The Blazers then ended the set scoring five of the next seven to secure the 15-12 victory in the fifth set and secure the 3-2 comeback victory. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Hailey McDevitt led the way in three statistical categories for the Golden Wolves with 13 kills, 19 assists and five aces. McDevitt also recorded two blocks and seven digs. 
  • Lindsay Ferguson tallied nine kills and also added three blocks.
  • Kayleigh Kehler led the way with 16 digs and added eight kills. Allie Evangelista led with four blocks and Julianna McGlone recorded three aces and 14 digs.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Stevenson to take on the Mustangs in a MAC Commonwealth matchup at 7:00 PM.
