Golden Wolves Score Late Equalizer, Draw With Royals, 2-2

Scranton, Pa (October 2, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-3-3) scored a last minute equalizer off the head of Ryan Cogill to grab a 2-2 draw with the University of Scranton (4-2-3) Wednesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Scranton.

Evan Bauer opened the scoring in the first three minutes of the game to put the Golden Wolves up 1-0 early but a goal in the last four minutes of the first half saw the Golden Wolves and the Royals head to the half locked at one. Scranton then grabbed the lead in the 71st minute to make it 2-1 but Cogill's header in the 90th minute leveled the score and secured the 2-2 draw for the Golden Wolves.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves struck first in the first three minutes of the game after Evan Bauer ripped a low shot at the goal that got past the Scranton keeper and put Alvernia up 1-0 early.
  • Alvernia almost doubled the lead at the 20 minute mark after Ryan Cogill ripped a shot towards the near post while shielding off a defender but Scranton's Ned Van Loan made a nice save to deny Cogill and keep it a one goal game.
  • Scranton leveled the score in the final four minutes of the half after a corner was whipped in, Alvernia keeper Evan Solley made back to back saves on shots by the Royals, but was unable to save the third attempt by Justin Curran which made it a 1-1 game heading into the half.
  • Cogill had two more chances to put the Golden Wolves up in the 60th minute of the game but both of his shots on goal were saved by Scranton's Van Loan to keep the game tied at one.
  • The Royals grabbed the lead in the 71st minute when Dean Finan played a cross to Ciaran Corr who caught the ball on the volley and put it past Solley and into the back of the net to make it 2-1 Royals.
  • Alvernia's Connor Kraycik had an opportunity to tie the game for the Golden Wolves in the 76th minute after he chopped his defender and fired a shot at the Scranton goal with his left foot but was unable to put it on frame.
  • Cogill found the leveler with 48 seconds left in the contest after Cogill was fouled just outside of the Scranton box and gave Alvernia a free kick in a dangerous position. Dominic Flowers stepped up to take the free kick for the Golden Wolves and whipped a ball into the Scranton box that found the head of Cogill who headed the ball into the top left corner of the goal to level the score and escape with a 2-2 draw.
