Tobin, Rezac, McLellan Lead Golden Wolves to Second Place Finish at Penn College Invitational

Williamsport, Pa (November 23, 2024) - Quinn Tobin, Jason Rezac and Hayden McLellan all took first place honors in their respective weight classes to lead Alvernia University to a second place team finish Saturday at the Penn College Invitational at Penn College. 

The Golden Wolves recorded seven top three finishes on Saturday and finished in second place in the team race behind Castleton. 

How it Happened 
  • Quinn Tobin took first place in the 149 pound bracket and tallied a 4-0 record on the day. Tobin started his day with a 19-2 tech fall over Randolph College's Adon Overstreet and then tallied another tech fall over Penn College's Noah Hunt, 16-1 to advance to the semifinals. Tobin then recorded his third tech fall of the day over Castleton's Dylan Vanegas, 15-0 to advance to the final. Tobin took on Marymount's Mateo Hernandez and took down Hernandez in a high scoring decision, 16-10 to secure the 149 pound title. 
  • Jason Rezac also took first in the 157 pound weight class and also tallied a 4-0 record. Rezac started his day with a pin over Anton Esterbrook from Penn College in 1:54 and then recorded a tech fall over Garrett Landon from Thaddeus Stevens Tech, 15-0 to move onto the semis. Rezac then took down Dominick Lapler from Castleton by fall in 1:07 and then recorded a 17-0 tech fall over Castleton's Jacob Carlcato to grab the 157 pound title. 
  • Hayden McLellan recorded the third first place finish for Alvernia with a 3-0 record in the 184 pound weight class. McLellan earned a first round bye and then took down Cormac Horlbogen of Castleton by tech fall, 16-0. McLellan then recorded a pin over Davlan Walte of Thaddeus Stevens in the semifinal and then recorded a 9-5 decision over Rylan Moose of Marymount in the final to grab the 184 pound title. 
  • Ryan LePore tallied a second place finish for the Golden Wolves in the 165 pound weight class and ended the day with a 2-1 record. LePore started his day with a 13-4 major decision over Ayden Sprague of Penn College and then recorded a 21-4 tech fall over Scranton's Jake Rudy to advance to the title bout. LePore then fell to Caleb Rojas from Castleton by decision, 11-5 to earn second place honors. 
  • Jason Chiodi tallied a third place finish for Alvernia in the 197 pound weight class and recorded a 3-1 record. Chiodi started his day with a 8-2 decision over Logan Frank from Castleton and then followed that with a pin over Scranton's Jonathan Sklavounos. Chiodi then dropped the semifinal match to Castleton's Josh Negron by fall but bounced back and recorded an 11-1 major decision over Stephen Jennings in the third place bout to take third. 
  • Aiden Swann also took third for the Golden Wolves in the 149 pound bracket and started with a pin over Shkeb Nadir from Scranton in 1:30. Swann then recorded a 12-5 decision over TJ Martin from Penn College but dropped the semifinal match to Mateo Hernandez from Marymount, 4-2. Swann responded with a tight, 1-0 decision over Dylan Vanegas from Castleton to secure third place honors. 
  • Garrett Gehr rounded out the third place finishers for the Golden Wolves with a third place finish in the 141 pound weight class. Gehr started with a 15-0 tech fall over Temuujin Erdenetuya from Marymount and a pin over Nick Bradbury in 2:44. Gehr then dropped the semi to Elijah Farlas from Castleton by fall but turned around and tallied a 17-1 tech fall over Trey Lee from Castleton to grab third place. 
  • James King tallied a fourth place finish in the 133 pound weight class and started his day with back to back wins. King first took down Maximillian Connel by major decision, 18-7 and then recorded a 5-1 decision over Zakariya Gurban to advance to the semifinal match. King then fell to Kaden Ware from Penn College by fall in the semi and Blake Dergham by major decision in the third place match, 13-3 to earn fourth place. 
  • William Knapp rounded the place finishers for the Golden Wolves with a sixth place finish in the 174 pound bracket. Knapp started with a pin over Eddries Nezam from Marymount in 2:13 but then dropped the next match to Darlus Mangiafico by decision, 12-9. Knapp then tallied back to back pins over Charles Kitching and Colby Celuck to advance to the fifth place bout. Knapp then fell to Marcus Lewis from Marymount by major decision, 17-5 to pick up sixth place honors. 
  • Anthony Astorino wrestled in the 133 pound bracket and fell to 0-2 on the day. Astorino dropped his first bout of the day to Blake Dergham from Penn College by fall and then fell to Joseph Custidio from Marymount in 1:28. 
  • Nolan Brown wrestled in the 149 pound weight class and recorded a 1-2 record on the day. Brown tallied a 17-2 tech fall over Jayden Shortz from Scranton in his first bout but then dropped the second bout to Mateo Hernandez by tech fall, 21-5. Brown then fell to Mason Lishness from Castleton by major decision, 14-2 to end his day. 
  • Sebastiano Spina also wrestled in the 149 pound bracket and also tallied a 1-2 record on the day. Spina dropped his first match of the day to Dylan Vanegas from Castleton by decision, 4-2 but bounced back with a 14-5 major decision over Ryan Findlay. Spina then fell to TJ Martin by way of a pin to end his day. 
  • James Moffat competed in the 174 pound weight class but fell to 0-2 on the day. Moffat dropped his first match to Marcus Lewis from Marymount by tech fall, 18-2 and then fell to Charles Kitching by pin in his second match of the day. 
  • Gino Giacolona wrestled in the 184 pound weight class and recorded a 1-2 record. Giacolona dropped the first match of the day to Rylan Moose by major decision, 12-4 but then bounced back with a 19-3 tech fall over Castleton's Cormac Horlbogen. Giacolona then had to forfeit his final match. 
  • Myles Brown competed in the 197 pound weight class and recorded a 1-2 record. Brown dropped his first match of the day to Stephen Jennings from Castleton by decision, 3-1 and then received a medical forfeit in his second match. Brown then fell to Ayden Bishoff from Waynesburg by decision, 10-8 to round out his day. 
  • Sam Myers wrestled in the 197 pound bracket and recorded a pin over Darmal Danish in 1:46 in his first bout but then fell to Nick Woodruff by tech fall, 16-0 and then to Mohammed Fofana by major decision, 20-8. 
  • Owen Reber competed in the 285 pound bracket for the Golden Wolves and recorded a 2-2 record. Reber dropped the first bout of the day to Keonta Crawford from Castleton by fall but then bounced back with a pin over Tyler Carter from Alvernia. Reber then took down Penn College's Zack Wilson by fall in 0:52 but then dropped his fourth match to Nicholai Brotzman by fall in 58 seconds. 
  • Tyler Carter rounded out the wrestlers for the Golden Wolves and finished with a 0-2 record. Carter received a bye in the first round and then fell to Caleb Snype by fall in 1:15 and then by Owen Reber also by fall in 1:43.
