Hess Nets Winner to Power Alvernia Past Stevenson, 1-0, in OT Thriller

Owings Mills, Md. (November 2, 2024) - Alvernia University's (12-6, 5-2) Olivia Hess netted the game winning goal in the eight minute of the overtime period to power the Golden Wolves to a 1-0 victory over Stevenson University (14-4, 5-2) Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth field hockey matchup at Stevenson.

Caroline Martin assisted Hess on the game winner to give the Golden Wolves the 1-0 victory over the Mustangs in the season finale. Alvernia's Lexi Boettcher recorded 11 saves in net to keep the clean sheet for the Golden Wolves.

How it Happened
  • Stevenson outshot Alvernia in the first quarter 5-0 with three going on goal but Alvernia's Lexi Boettcher saved all three to send the game to the second quarter tied at zero.
  • The Mustangs continued to control the offensive side of things in the second quarter by sending seven shots at the Alvernia net with six of the seven going on goal but Boettcher continued to be a brick wall for the Golden Wolves and saved all six as the game headed to the half locked at zero.
  • The Golden Wolves came out of the halftime break and fired two quick shots on goal, one from Caroline Martin and the other from Kelsy McClintock but both were saved.
  • The Alvernia defense held strong and did not allow a shot in the third quarter as the game headed to the fourth still tied at zero.
  • Yet another scoreless quarter saw the Mustangs send one shot on net but Boettcher was there yet again to deny Stevenson and send the game to overtime tied at zero.
  • The Golden Wolves found the game winner in the eighth minute of the overtime period after Olivia Hess inserted a corner that then found its way back to Hess on the post. Hess flipped the ball past the diving goalie and into the back of the net to secure the 1-0 victory for the Golden Wolves.
