Mighty Macs Down Golden Wolves in Opener, 77-53

Immaculata, Pa (November 8, 2024) - Alvernia Women's Basketball (0-1) dropped its 2024-25 season-opener to Immaculata University (1-0), 77-53, on Friday night in non-conference action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves led 16-11 through the first quarter, but the Mighty Macs outscored the Golden Wolves 25-10 in the second quarter to take a 36-26 lead into the half. Immaculata kept it rolling in the second half and outscored Alvernia in the final two frames for the 77-53 win.

How it Happened
  • The Mighty Macs got the scoring going with an opening-possession 3-pointer, but Alvernia tied it at 3-3 a minute later off a Jennah DeGout free through and Jordyn Ingelido jumper. Alvernia then took a 4-3 lead two minutes into the quarter on an Olivia Burke free throw before both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes.
  • The Mighty Macs broke the scoreless drought on a layup and pushed their lead to 11-6 with 3:34 to play in the quarter.
  • A layup from Burke with 3:05 to play in the quarter sparked Alvernia into a 10-0 run to close out the quarter. DeGout and Ryleigh Poole combined for six of Alvernia's ten points during the run as the Golden Wolves took a 16-11 lead into the second frame.
  • A pair of made free throws from Burke pushed Alvernia's lead to seven, 18-11, and Alvernia maintained its seven point lead, 20-13, a couple of minutes later on an Ingelido layup.
  • Immaculata answered with a layup on its next possession and went on a 13-0 run over the next 3:11 to retake the lead, 26-20, with 4:54 to play in the quarter.
  • A Paige O'Brien 3-pointer brought Alvernia back within a possession, 26-23, but Immaculata outscored Alvernia 10-3 through the remainder of the quarter to take a 36-26 lead into the half.
  • Burke put up a quick layup to open the second half for Alvernia, but Immaculata pushed its lead to 20, 51-31, as the quarter passed its midpoint.
  • The Golden Wolves scored ten points through the final four minutes of the third quarter - eight of which came from Burke - but Immaculata led 57-41 going into the final ten minutes.
  • Burke posted another two layups for the Golden Wolves through the first two and a half minutes of the quarter, but Alvernia could not threaten the Mighty Macs' lead. Paige O'Brien scored Alvernia's final five points of the game, but Immaculata came away with the 77-53 win.
