Late Goals Lift Neumann Past Alvernia, 3-2

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 6, 2024) - Neumann University (2-5-2, 1-4-2) scored two late goals to take a 3-2 win over Alvernia University (4-4-1, 2-4-1) on Friday night in MAC Women's Ice Hockey action at Body Zone.

After a scoreless first period, both teams netted goals in the second to make it a 1-1 game going into the third period. Neumann broke the tie on a power-play goal with two and a half minutes to play, and then scored an insurance goal a minute later to take a 3-1 lead. Alvernia threatened with a late goal from Julia Franklin, but came up short in the 3-2 loss.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia had the first power-play opportunity of the game after Neumann was called for a slash five minutes into the action. The Golden Wolves fired off seven shots during the power-play opportunity, but were unable to convert.
  • The Golden Wolves then had to kill off a Knight power-play just a few seconds after Alvernia's opportunity ended. Alvernia had its best look of the period during the Neumann power-play when Emma Hart broke away for a 1v1 opportunity against the Neumann goalie. But, Hart's attempt was saved and Alvernia killed off the remainder of the power-play.
  • Alvernia got its second power-play opportunity late in the period, but the Golden Wolves were only able to put two shots on net as the period ended with the score tied at 0-0. The Golden Wolves outshot Neumann 12-4 on goal in the first period, and 29-7 overall.
  • After the majority of the second period went back-and-forth with neither team seeing a strong opportunity - including an uneventful 4v4 for both sides - Neumann broke through with just over four minutes to play in the period on a putback goal through the five-hole by Christine Worms to give the Knights to 1-0 lead.
  • Neumann's lead did not last long as Madalyn Jukus netted her first career goal on a shot from just inside the blue-line that connected with the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 1:50 to play in the second period.
  • The Golden Wolves once again outshot the Knights in the second period; 14-5 on goal and 24-8 overall.
  • Much as they did all game, the Golden Wolves continued to pressure through the first 15 of the third period, but it was the Knights who broke the tie. Neumann was awarded a power play with just under three and a half minutes to play and the game tied at 1-1. The Knights then broke the tie 40 seconds into the power play on a goal into the upper right corner of the net.
  • Neumann then scored what would turn out to be a much needed insurance goal just under a minute later to take a 3-1 lead with 1:46 to play.
  • Alvernia did not let up and went empty-net to get an extra attacker on the ice the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves threatened with a goal from Julia Franklin from faceoff dot and into the opposite upper corner of the net with 34 seconds to make it a 3-2 game. But, Alvernia did not have another opportunity as Neumann took the 3-2 win.
