Alvernia Blanks Neumann, 4-0

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 7, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-4-1) scored a short-handed goal in the first period and never looked back as the Golden Wolves took a 4-0 win over Neumann University (2-6-2, 1-5-2) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Women's Ice Hockey action Body Zone.

Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a short-handed goal by Addy Gularte, and Alvernia made it a 3-0 game with two goals in the second. The Golden Wolves then scored their fourth of the afternoon early in the third period and did not allow a shot on goal in the final period to take the 4-0 win.

How it Happened
  • After an early back and forth of traded possessions, Alvernia was forced to go on the penalty kill after Neumann was awarded a power-play opportunity. But, it was the Golden Wolves who took advantage with a short-handed goal by Addy Gularte to make it a 1-0 game just over halfway through the period. Alvernia killed off the remainder without allowing a Neumann shot.
  • The Golden Wolves held their 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period, with Alvernia fending off a late push by the Knights as Neumann ended the period on their second power-play of the period.
  • The Golden Wolves and Knights traded shots early in the second period before Alvernia scored its second of the afternoon. Kathryn Palmer scored on a tip-in goal off the assist of Julia Franklin to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead just under eight minutes into the second.
  • The Golden Wolves killed off another power -play shortly after the Palmer goal to keep the Knights off the board.
  • The Golden Wolves controlled the latter part of the second period, and Alvernia added to its lead with 1:08 to go in the second on a goal from Noelle De Magistris off the assist of Shae Hudec to send the game into the third period with a 3-0 Alvernia lead.
  • Alvernia opened the third period with an early power-play opportunity, and the Golden Wolves took advantage. Just 21 seconds into the power play, Sydney Bradley fired a shot into the back of the net off a rocket from just inside the blue line to give Alvernia the 4-0 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves continued to pressure the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves did not allow a shot on goal in the final frame as Alvernia secured its first conference shutout of the season.
Inside the Box Score
  • Julia Franklin and Addy Gularte each finished with two points. Franklin's came off of two assists, and Gularte had a goal and an assist. Franklin also led Alvernia with a 12-for-14 performance on the faceoff.
  • Sydney Bradley, Kathryn Palmer, and Noelle De Magistris each finished with a goal. 
  • Stephanie Skorupa finished with 13 saves in the shutout win.
  • Alvernia out-shot Neumann 34-13 on goal. And Alvernia won 34 of the 47 faceoff opportunities.

  • Alvernia has off until January 3rd when the Golden Wolves return to action at Albertus Magnus. Alvernia returns to conference play the following weekend at Hood. Alvernia is in fourth in conference standings heading into the midseason break.
