Golden Wolves Down Falcons, 4-3

New Haven, CT. (Jan. 3, 2025) - Alvernia University (6-4-1) used three first period goals to take a 4-3 win over Albertus Magnus (1-9-1) on Friday evening in non-conference women's ice hockey action at Albertus.

Alvernia jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of action, and Alvernia led 4-1 through the early minutes of the second. But, Albertus Magnus made it a 4-3 game late in the second. Alvernia did not add to its lead in the third, but the Golden Wolves were able to prevent a comeback by the Falcons to secure a 4-3 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia struck early with a goal from Julia Franklin off the Kathryn Palmer assist just under five minutes into the game. Addy Gularte then made it a 2-0 game for Alvernia off the assist of Laila Tosi just four minutes later.
  • The Golden Wolves maintained control for much of the opening period and Alvernia made it a 3-0 game when Palmer scored on a power-play goal off the assist of Franklin for the Golden Wolves with five minutes to play in the period. Alvernia had one more power-play opportunity to close out the period, but Albertus made the stop as Alvernia took the 3-0 lead into the second period.
  • The Falcons came out and got an early goal to open the second period, but Alvernia pushed its lead back to three, 4-1, with another goal off the Franklin to Palmer connection three minutes later. 
  • Albertus Magnus responded three minutes later to cut Alvernia's lead in half, 4-2, and the Falcons scored another goal late in the period to threaten Alvernia's lead and make it a 4-3 game going into the final period.
  • Alvernia played a clean third period and prevented Albertus from having another solid chance on net. Alvernia's Stephanie Skorupa made five saves in net and Alvernia's defense had three blocks in the final 20 minutes to secure the 4-3 win for the Golden Wolves. 
Inside the Box Score
  • Kathryn Palmer and Julia Franklin each finished with three points. Palmer finished with two goals and an assist, and Franklin had a goal and two assists. Franklin also led Alvernia going 10-for-13 on the faceoff dot.
  • Moa Lagh finished with a team-high two blocks.
  • Stephanie Skorupa finished with 16 saves en route to her fourth win of the season.
