Alvernia Downs Misericordia, 78-64

Dallas, Pa. (Dec. 7, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-2) defeated Misericordia University (4-2) 78-64 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference Men's Basketball action at Misericordia.

Alvernia used a 25-4 run that spanned the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to take a 16 point lead with 14 minutes remaining. The Cougars never threatened after the run as Alvernia took the win.

How it Happened
  • An Elijah Hamilton jumper opened the scoring for Alvernia on its first possession. The Golden Wolves and Cougars then traded points through the opening five minutes as Misericordia held the slight 8-6 lead through the first five minutes of action.
  • The Cougars took a two possession lead a few minutes later, but Alvernia tied it at 12-12 on back-to-back layups from Kareem Diaz and Mickeel Allen. After another tie at 14-14 with 10:33 to play in the half, Misericordia used a quick 9-2 run in just over a minute of game time to push its lead to seven, 23-16.
  • Alvernia responded with a 3-point play by Janye Stanley and a layup from Jameel Burton Jr. to get back within two, 23-21, with 7:56 to play in the half.
  • With Misericordia leading 29-24 with 5:32 to play in the half, Alvernia closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take the 34-29 lead into the half. That run fed into the first six minutes of the second half, where Alvernia went on a 15-4 in the opening minutes to push its lead to 16, 49-33, with 14:14 to play. Jakob Kelly capped off the 25 point, 11 minute span with a 3-pointer.
  • The Cougars never fully recovered and Alvernia led by at least ten points the rest of the way. Alvernia twice led by 17 points - its largest lead. The first 17 point lead came off an Allen layup and its second came off a Kelly jumper with six minutes to play. 
  • The Cougars cut it down to ten points just with 1:35 to play, But, Alvernia scored seven points - six from Robert Cottrell-  off of made free throws to close out the game and come away with the 78-64 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Jakob Kelly led Alvernia with a 26 point, 12 rebound double-double. Kelly's 26 points was his most in a game since game two of the 2023-24 season. Kelly shot 11-for-18 and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. He also had a team-high four assists.
  • Elijah Hamilton also had a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds.
  • Alvernia out-rebounded the Cougars 44-26, and the Golden Wolves had 16 second-chance points to Misericordia's six.
