Alvernia and Wilkes Tie, 1-1, Golden Wolves Take Shootout, 3-2

Reading, Pa (February 16, 2024) - Alvernia University (11-9-4, 9-7-3) played to a 1-1 draw with Wilkes University (16-6-2, 11-6-2) but the Golden Wolves took the shootout, 3-2 Friday afternoon in a UCHC women's ice hockey matchup at BodyZone. 

The Golden Wolves and the Colonels both netted second period goals but neither team could find the back of the net in the third period or overtime as the game headed to a shootout. After nine rounds, Alvernia's Sofia King buried her shootout opportunity to secure the 3-2 shootout win for the Golden Wolves. 

How it Happened
  • A scoreless first period was highlighted by the Golden Wolves sending 14 shots on goal to Wilkes' nine. Sydney Bradley led the way for Alvernia with four shots on goal in the period as the game heading into the first intermission tied at zero. 
  • Alvernia struck first in the first five minutes of the second period when Gillian Evans found Julia Franklin up the ice, Franklin then connected with Sydney Bradley who fired the puck into the back of the Colonels net to put Alvernia up 1-0. 
  • Wilkes leveled the score at the 13:31 mark of the second period when Tilly Wierdsma and Haylee Bouchard connected with Amanda Spreadbury to make it 1-1 with under seven to play in the period. 
  • The Colonels threatened once more in the final three minutes of the period with back to back shots on the Alvernia goal but Golden Wolves goalie Julia Beaven made a diving save to deny the Colonels a second goal and sent the game into the final intermission locked at one. 
  • Wilkes and Alvernia both recorded nine shots on goal in the final period of play with Bradley and Khenzie Connick both tallying three shots on goal. 
  • The Golden Wolves sent six shots at the Wilkes goal in the final three minutes of regulation but two were blocked and three were saved as the game went into overtime tied at one. 
  • The Golden Wolves controlled the offensive in the extra period with four shots on goal but could not find the back of the goal as the contest headed to a shootout. 
  • Wilkes' Jordan Ferry converted the first shootout opportunity and then both Beaven and Audrey Milne tallied two saves apiece. 
  • Sikke Ask skated out to center ice needing a goal to extend the shootout, Ask skated toward the goal and fired the puck into the top left side of the goal to level the shootout at one and extend the shootout. 
  • After back to back misses from the Golden Wolves and Colonels, Wierdsma converted her shootout opportunity to put the pressure on Alvernia. Khenzie Connick took the shot for Alvernia and buried the puck in the net to extend the shootout.
  • The shootout went four more rounds with both teams falling to find the back of the net. After a miss from Wilkes, Sofia King skated to center ice to take her shootout opportunity, she skated toward the goal and fired the puck top shelf and past Milne to secure the shootout victory for the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Sydney Bradley led the Golden Wolves with the goal and added a total of six shots on goal and added four blocks. 
  • Julia Franklin and Gillian Evans added the assists on the Bradley goal and Franklin added three shots on goal and nine faceoff wins. 
  • Julia Beaven recorded 25 saves in net for the Golden Wolves. 

Of Note 
  • The Golden Wolves snapped Wilkes' ten game win streak with the draw. The Colonels are still unbeaten in the last 11 games. 
  • The tie is the first draw in the series between the two teams. The Golden Wolves still hold the overall series lead with a 6-1-1 record over the Colonels.

  • Alvernia is back in action when they travel up to Wilkes to take on the Colonels in game two of the weekend series. Puck is set to drop at 3:30 PM.
