Colonels Down Golden Wolves, 3-1

Wilkes-Barre, Pa (February 17, 2024) - Wilkes University (17-6-2, 12-6-2) used two first period goals en route to the 3-1 victory over Alvernia University (11-10-4, 9-8-3) in a UCHC women's ice hockey matchup Saturday afternoon at Wilkes. 

Alvernia netted the opening goal but two goals in the final five minutes of the first period proved to be the difference. The Colonels grabbed an empty netter as insurance in the final 30 seconds of the game to secure the 3-1 victory. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia struck first with a Khenzie Connick goal off the assist of Gillian Evans just under 14 minutes into the first period. 
  • Alvernia's lead did not last long as the Colonels evened it up at 1-1 on a power play goal with four and a half minutes remaining in the first period.
  • The game was poised to go into the first intermission tied at 1-1, but Wilkes scored a goal with 33 seconds remaining in the period to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Alvernia had three power play opportunities over the next two periods, but Alvernia could not convert to even the game. Wilkes then scored an emptier netter with 21 seconds remaining for the 3-1 win.

  • With the loss, Alvernia remained at #6 in the final UCHC standings. The Golden Wolves will head to #3 Manhattanville for the first round of the UCHC playoff on Wednesday.
