Pride Down Golden Wolves, 80-70

Chester, Pa (February 21, 2024) - Alvernia University (16-10) fell to Widener University (23-3) 80-70, in a MAC Commonwealth, men's basketball semifinal matchup Wednesday night at Widener. 

The Pride grabbed an eight point, 37-29 lead at the half but the Golden Wolves cut the lead to nine with just over five minutes left in the game but the Pride held on to secure the ten point, 80-70 lead. 

How it Happened 
  • The Pride started the game off by jumping out to a 21-13 lead in the first ten minutes of the first half. 
  • The Golden Wolves bounced back with an 11-7 scoring run to cut the lead to four, 28-24 with just over five minutes left in the half. Malik Slay tallied six points during the run and Jakob Kelly tallied five. 
  • Widener ended the first half on a 9-5 scoring run to make it an eight point, 37-29 game after the first half 
  • Widener came out of the half and edged a 14-10 scoring run in the first five minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 12, 51-39. 
  • The Golden Wolves and the Pride traded buckets back and forth in the next five minutes as the Pride kept a 13 point, 63-50 lead. 
  • Alvernia responded with an 11-7 run over the next five minutes to cut the lead to nine, 70-61 with five to play.
  • The Pride tallied ten of the final 19 points of the contest to secure the ten point, 80-70 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Malik Slay and Jakob Kelly both scored a team high 16 points for the Golden Wolves. Slay added nine rebounds and three assists. 
  • Kyle Gordon led the Golden Wolves with ten rebounds and added 14 points and a game high four blocks. 
  • Nigel Cooke rounded out the Alvernia scorers in double figures with a ten point performance and added four rebounds.
