Alvernia Opens 2024 Season with 17-9 Win Over Immaculata

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 21, 2024) - Alvernia University (1-0) opened its season with a strong 17-9 win over Immaculata University (0-1) on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves jumped out to a 6-2 win through the first quarter and led the game wire to wire. 

How it Happened
  • Alvernia jumped out to a 3-0 before allowing an Immaculata possession. Haleigh Lackner scored Alvernia's first goal of the season and the next two came off the stick of Meagan Moky. 
  • The Mighty Macs won their first draw control following Alvernia's third goal, and Immaculata scored on its next two possessions to cut Alvernia's lead down to one, 3-2.
  • Alvernia then held Immaculata scoreless the rest of the quarter as Alvernia scored three goals in the final nine and a half minutes of the first half to take a 6-2 lead into the second frame. Olivia McCambly, Lackner, and Hailey Miller each scored for the Golden Wolves in the final nine minutes of the quarter.
  • Immaculata scored the first goal of the second quarter, but Alvernia scored three of the final four goals of the first half as the Golden Wolves jumped out to a 9-4 lead going into the half. Miller scored twice for Alvernia and McCambly scored the third of the quarter for the Golden Wolves.
  • Alvernia kept it rolling and pushed its lead to eight, 12-4, through the first nine minutes of the second half as Alvernia scored the first three of the quarter. Lackner, Moky, and Sherrin Smith scored for the Golden Wolves.
  • Immaculata scored two to cut Alvernia's lead in half, 12-6, with four and a half minutes to play in the third quarter, but Alvernia scored the final two of the quarter to push its lead back to eight, 14-6. Moky and Lackner each scored their fourth goals of the game as Alvernia entered the final quarter with a 14-6 lead.
  • The Mighty Macs and Golden Wolves traded goals in the fourth quarter. Alvernia's goals came from Moky, Lackner, and Gracie Brower scored her first collegiate goal. 
Inside the Box Score
  • Lackner led Alvernia with nine points off of five goals and four assists. She also had four ground balls, five caused turnovers, and five draw controls.
  • Moky also finished with five goals, had one assist, and led the Golden Wolves with ten draw controls.
  • Hannah Wolfe made five saves and picked up the win in her first collegiate lacrosse start. 
Of Note
  • Lackner had her third career nine point game.
  • Moky scored a career-high five goals.
  • Hailey Miller also had a career-high three goals
  • Alvernia went 12-for-14 on the clear, and held Immaculata to 14-22. 
  • The Golden Wolves have now won nine straight against Immaculata.
