Marymount Downs Alvernia, 20-7

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2024) - Marymount University (1-0) used a ten goal second half to take down Alvernia University (1-1) 20-7 on Friday evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action. 

With the loss, Alvernia drops to 1-1 through the first week of the season. Marymount starts its season at 1-0 with today's win.

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first four minutes, Alvernia broke through first with a player-up goal from Haleigh Lackner. But, the Saints evened it up at 1-1 with a player-down goal just under three minutes later.
  • The Saints took a 2-1 lead just under a minute later, but Alvernia evened it up at 2-2 with a goal from Meagan Moky
  • The back and forth continued and, after a Saints goal with 5:24 to play in the opening quarter, Sherrin Smith locked the game up at 3-3 with 4:51 to play in the quarter.
  • The Saints scored the final goal of the quarter to take a 4-3 lead into the second frame, and that ignited an 11-1 run for Marymount that gave the Saints a 14-4 lead through the midpoint of the third quarter. Moky accounted for Alvernia's only goal during the run.
  • Goals from Olivia McCambly and Lackner put an end to Marymount's run and made it a 14-6 game with 11 minutes to play.
  • Marymount scored six of the final seven goals for the 20-7 final. Moky made it a hat-trick with Alvernia's final goal of the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • Meagan Moky led Alvernia with three goals and Lackner finished with two.
  • Hannah Tyler finished with two draw controls, and Kayleigh Kight hat a team-high three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Of Note
  • Marymount found success on the draw and won 22 of the 28 draw controls during the game.
  • Alvernia went 15-for-19 on clears and caused 15 turnovers by the Saints.
