Massive Fourth Quarter Powers Alvernia Past Elizabethtown, 22-18

Elizabethtown, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2024) - Alvernia University (2-1) outscored Elizabethtown College (1-1) 10-2 in the fourth quarter en route to a 22-18 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Elizabethtown. 

With the game tied at 10-10 at the half, Elizabethtown took a 16-12 lead into the final frame. But, Alvernia scored nine straight to open the fourth quarter and went on down to the Blue Jays 22-18.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia opened the scoring with back-to-back goals from Haleigh Lackner and Sherrin Smith. Elizabethtown got on the board with a goal just under three minutes into the contest, but Alvernia retook the lead, 3-1, with a goal from Meagan Moky.
  • The Blue Jays then scored six goals in nine minutes to take a 7-3 lead with 1:14 to play
  • Alvernia began chipping away at the Elizabethtown lead with goals from Lackner and Smith in the final 23 seconds of the quarter to make it a 7-5 game in favor of Elizabethtown heading into the second quarter.
  • Alvernia continued to stay hot to open the second quarter and scored five straight goals to take a 10-7 lead with 9:37 to play. Lackner had two during Alvernia's run to open the quarter, and Moky, Olivia McCambly, and Sophia Ruocco each added one. 
  • The Blue Jays scored the final three goals of the quarter to tie the game at 10-10 going into the second half.
  • The Blue Jays scored six of the first seven goals during the opening minutes of the third quarter to retake the lead, 16-11.
  • Alvernia got one back to close out the quarter on a goal from Lackner, but Elizabethtown took a four goal lead, 16-12, into the final frame. 
  • The Golden Wolves opened the fourth quarter on a nine goal run and swung all momentum in their direction as Alvernia took a 21-16 lead with 4:43 to play. Smith had three during the run, Lackner had two, and Lindsay Kerchner, Ruocco, Hailey Miller, and McCambly each added one. 
  • The Blue Jays scored two of the final three goals of the game, but never got closer than four goals as Alvernia took the 22-18 win over Elizabethtown. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Lackner finished with nine points off of eight goals and an assist to lead the Golden Wolves.
  • Smith finished with five goals and Moky added three.
  • Lackner also finished with a team-high 12 draw controls.
  • Kayleigh Kight had a team-high four caused turnovers and Hannah Tyler finished with a team-high four ground balls. 

Of Note
  • Lackner's eight goals matches a career-high for the senior.
  • The Golden Wolves found success on the eight meter on Tuesday night and went 6-for-8.
  • Alvernia and Elizabethtown combined for 40 goals on the night. That is the highest combined score for Alvernia since a loss to Lycoming in 2018 where the Golden Wolves and Warriors combined for 47 goals.
