Misericordia's Strong Second Half Powers Cougars Past Golden Wolves, 18-11

Reading, Pa. (March 12, 2024) - Misericordia University (2-2) outscored Alvernia University (2-5) 9-4 in the second half en route to an 18-11 win over the Golden Wolves on Tuesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia. 

Misericordia led by just two at the half, 9-7, but the Cougars held Alvernia to just one goal in the third quarter while building up its lead to six, 14-8. Alvernia put up three in the fourth quarter, but could not close the gap as Misericordia took the 18-11 win. 

How it Happened
  • Misericordia opened the scoring with a goal just under nine minutes into the action. Alvernia quickly matched the goal on the ensuing possession on a free-position goal by Haleigh Lackner
  • The Golden Wolves and Cougars traded goals to make it a 2-2 game with 4:22 to play in the quarter. Alvernia's second goal of the game came from Meagan Moky. But, Misericordia scored the final two goals of the quarter to take a 4-2 lead into the second frame.
  • Misericordia opened the second quarter with a quick goal in the opening minute, but Lackner won the ensuing draw control for Alvernia and Moky quickly scored to bring Alvernia back within two, 5-3.
  • After another Misericordia goal, Alvernia scored two straight - both from Mackenzie McKinney - to get back within one, 6-5.
  • The Cougars and Golden Wolves then traded goals - with Alvernia's goals coming from Moky and Lackner -  but the Golden Wolves could not tie it up. 
  • Misericordia took a 9-7 lead into the half after scoring the final goal of the second quarter.
  • The Cougars scored four straight to open the third quarter and take a 13-7 lead with 3:19 to play in the quarter. A man-up free-position goal from LAckner put an end to the Cougars' 4-0 run, but, following a Misericordia free-position goal in the final minute of the quarter, the Cougars took a 14-8 lead into the final 15 minutes.
  • Misericordia scored two goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 16-8 lead with ten minutes to play. Haleigh Lackner scored three goals for Alvernia in the fourth quarter, but Misericordia's lead was too much to overcome as the Cougars came away with the 18-11 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Haleigh Lackner led Alvernia with six goals. It's the third time through seven games that Lackner has scored five or more goals in a game, and it is her sixth multi-goal game of the season.
  • Meagan Moky finished with a hat trick for her sixth multi-goal game of the year. 
  • Lackner led Alvernia with nine draw controls, and she and Cailyn Hawley finished with three caused turnovers. Olivia McCambly led Alvernia with three ground balls.
  • Hannah Wolfe posted eight saves for the second straight game.
  • Misericordia's Michelle Torzilli led all scorers with 11 points off of eight goals and three assists.
