Falcons Sweep Golden Wolves

Reading, Pa (March 16, 2024) - Messiah University (6-9, 2-0) took two games from Alvernia University (8-5, 0-2) to secure the series sweep Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader in Angelica Park. 

The Falcons took game one by a score of 7-3 after five first inning runs and grabbed game two 4-2 to secure the sweep. 

Game 1:

How it Happened 
  • The Falcons jumped out to an early five run lead in the top of the first after an Alvernia error allowed two runs to score and then a Messiah two run homer made it 4-0. An RBI single into the right center gap capped the five run inning for the Falcons. 
  • Messiah tacked on two more in the second after a two run homer to left made it a 7-0 ballgame. 
  • The Falcons held the Golden Wolves at bay for the next five at bats until Merin Bellacima singled through the left side and a Messiah error allowed Taylor McClain to score. 
  • Alexia Fitzgerald then came up and smoked a two RBI double over the left fielders head to score Bellacima and Brooke Hauck but it was not enough as the Falcons grabbed game one, 7-3.

  • Maggie Loomis started in the circle for Alvernia and allowed five runs. Natalie Berwick came on in relief and went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. 
  • Kelsey Racine pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Alvernia.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a Messiah error allowed Fitzgerald to score. 
  • Messiah grabbed one back in the next half inning after an RBI groundout plated a run and made it a 1-1 ballgame. 
  • Hauck singled up the middle in the home half of the second and drove in McClain to give Alvernia the lead back, 2-1. 
  • The Falcons continued to answer Alvernia in the third and posted a run to make it a 2-2 game. Messiah's McKenzie Shannon ripped a hard hit ground ball down the third base line, Payton Splain made a great diving stop but the throw was not in time to get Shannon at first and a run was able to score. 
  • Messiah then tacked on two more in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to grab the 4-2 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves had runners in scoring position in the sixth inning and their leadoff batter on in the seventh but were unable to put any runs up as the Falcons secured game two, 4-2.

Up Next 
  • Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Rutgers Camden. Games are set for 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
