Golden Wolves Fall to Heidelberg, 7-6 in Spring Break Opener.

Fort Myers, FL (March 2, 2024) - Heidelberg University (4-1) tallied two runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure a 7-6 victory over Alvernia University (2-2) in a non-conference baseball matchup in Fort Myers.

Heidelberg held a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning before the Golden Wolves tallied two in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to grab the 6-5 lead. Heidelberg then posted two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure the 7-6 victory.

How it Happened
  • Heidelberg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after putting up runs in the first and second innings. The Student Princes plated a run in the first thanks to a bases loaded walk and then tallied a second in their half of the second inning after an RBI groundout.
  • The Golden Wolves halved the lead in the bottom half of the second after a bases loaded walk forced in a run. Mike Ramundo singled through the right side to start things off and was followed by Ben Houghton and Bobby Hansen who both worked walks to load the bases. Logan Nelson then worked the third walk in four batters to force Ramundo in and make it a 2-1 ballgame.
  • Heidelberg pushed the lead to three in the top half of the fifth inning after a single up the middle plated two runners and made it 4-1.
  • Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the fifth after Quincy Esannason drew a walk, Jake Chapman ripped a triple into the right center gap to score Esannason and cut the lead to two, 4-2 after five innings.
  • Heidelberg posted another run in the sixth inning after an RBI single to make it 5-2 but the Golden Wolves responded thanks to a Jason Kelly two run shot to left center to cut the lead to one, 5-4.
  • Alvernia grabbed its first lead of the ballgame in the home half of the seventh after Ramundo poked a two RBI single into right field to plate Luke Jones and Timmy Hitchcock and put Alvernia up 6-5.
  • Heidelberg responded in the next half inning by spotting two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 7-6 lead thanks to two RBI singles.
  • Heidelberg shut down Alvernia in the final two at bats to secure the 7-6 victory.
