Alvernia Splits Thursday Games in Florida

Clermont, Fla. (March 7, 2024) - Alvernia University (3-3) went 1-1 on Thursday as Alvernia continued on with its spring training trip in Clermont, Florida.

The Golden Wolves defeated Chatham University (2-5), 8-0, in five innings to start the day, but then fell to Mount Union (8-1), 7-1, in its second game of the day.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia got on the board in the top of the first and took an early 2-0 lead. Alexia Fitzgerald led off with a single through the left side and then scored on a single through the left side by Maggie Loomis. Loomis then scored later in the inning on a Chatham fielding error during the at-bat of Tara Tumasz.
  • Alvernia then added three more in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Jaclyn Barbera and Lauren Jascewsky scored on a bunt by Payton Splain that resulted into an overthrow at first, and Alvernia's third run of the inning came on a single to right field by Paige Paciolla to score Loomis.
  • The Golden Wolves kept it rolling in the top of the third. Brooke Hauck led off the inning by reaching on an error. She then advanced to second on a stolen base and moved to third on a tag-up. Hauck then scored on an infield ground out by Jascewsky to make it a 6-0 game.
  • Alvernia tacked on two more in the top of the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. Fitzgerald scored on an infield groundout by Paciolla, and Meryn Bellacima flew out to center to score Loomis and give Alvernia the 8-0 lead.
  • The Cougars did not threaten in the fifth as Alvernia ran-ruled Chatham, 8-0.

  • The Purple Raiders showed the first scoring threat of the game in the top of the third when they had a runner on second with one out. The base runner moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Alvernia got out of the jam with a groundout back to the pitcher for the third out of the inning. Alvernia also had a runner on third in Alexia Fitzgerald with two out, but the Purple Raiders forced a pop-up to the catcher to also end Alvernia's threat and move the game to the fourth inning locked at 0-0.
  • Mount Union again threatened in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs, and this time the Purple Raiders converted. Mount Union made it 1-0 on a groundout to short for the first out of the inning. The Purple Raiders made it 2-0 on a fly to shallow right field. Mount Union then took the 3-0 lead on a squeeze, but Alvernia made its second out of the inning on the play. Maggie Loomis then recorded a strikeout swinging for the third out of the inning.
  • Mount Union then scored three runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. All three runs of the inning came off misplays due to the sun in left field.
  • The Purple Raiders added on more on a single to center in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Alvernia prevented the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with Maddie Matthews scoring on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt after reaching earlier in the inning on a single to right. But, Alvernia never threatened further as Mount Union came away with the 7-1 win.

  • Alvernia concludes its spring training trip on Friday with two games. The Golden Wolves take on Otterbein in their first game of the day and Heidelberg in its final game of the trip.
