Clermont, Florida (March 8, 2024) - Alvernia University (6-3) ended its spring training trip to Florida with a two-game sweep on Friday at the Spring Games.
Alvernia defeated Otterbein University, 5-1, in its first game of the day. Alvernia then edged out a 1-0 win over Heidelberg University to close out the day and its week-long trip to Florida.

How it Happened
- Otterbein took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a one-run single to center field.
- Alvernia responded in its half of the first. The Golden Wolves loaded the bases with no outs and scored their first run on a bases loaded hit by pitch on Payton LaScala to score Maggie Loomis. Alvernia added two more runs to take a 3-1 lead on a grounder to third by Jaclyn Barbera to score Paige Paciolla and LaScalla.
- Alvernia added to its lead in the bottom of the second with Payton Splain leading off the inning with a solo homer to left field to make it a 4-1 game.
- The Golden Wolves kept it rolling in the bottom of the third. Splain led off the inning with a single to left. Later in the inning, Splain scored on a Taylor McClain single through the left side to give Alvernia the 5-1 lead.
- Otterbein had a baserunner in the top of the seventh, but the Cardinals never threatened as Alvernia came away with the 5-1 win.

How it Happened
- After a scoreless first three innings, Alvernia got on the board in the top of the fourth. Paige Paciolla singled up the middle to lead off the inning and worked her way to third during the at-bats of Payton LaScale and Tara Tumasz. Paciolla then scored on a single to center by Emily Sano to put Alvernia on the board, 1-0.
- Heidelberg got its first base runner on a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth. But, Alvernia retired the next three batters to get out of the inning and maintain its 1-0 lead.
- Heidelberg had another opportunity to even it up in the bottom of the fifth. Heidelberg recorded its first hit of the inning on a single to center field with two outs. That runner moved to second on another hit, but was then thrown out at home by Julie Burkhardt in left field to Janine Crawrford at home for the final out of the inning to end the threat.
- Heidelberg had base runners in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Alvernia never allowed a threat as the Golden Wolves came away with the 1-0 win.
