Golden Wolves Sweep Mustangs on Senior Day

Reading, Pa (April 13, 2024) - Alvernia University (16-9, 6-4) took two games from Stevenson University (7-13, 4-6) to secure the sweep in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Angelica Park. 

The Golden Wolves scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off game one, 9-8 and then shut the Mustangs out in game two, 5-0 to secure the sweep.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia struck first in game one after Maggie Loomis and Alexia Fitzgerald executed a first and third steal to score Fitzgerald and take a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Mustangs bounced back with three runs in the third inning after a two RBI double to right center and a RBI single to left center to grab the 3-1 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves responded with two runs on their own in the home half of the third inning when Taylor McClain beat out an infield single and drove in Loomis and Tara Tumasz tallied an RBI single to tie the game at three. 
  • Stevenson regained the lead in the next half inning after a two RBI triple to right center and an RBI single saw the Mustangs take a 6-3 lead. 
  • Fitzgerald and McClain pulled the Golden Wolves within one, 6-5 after Fitzgerald ripped an RBI double and McClain tallied another infield single to make it a one run ballgame. 
  • The Mustangs added two more in the top of the sixth to push the lead to three, 8-5. 
  • The Golden Wolves put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk the game off and secure the 9-8 victory. Loomis started things off with an RBI single to left and then McClain tallied a sacrifice fly to score Merin Bellacima to pull within one. 
  • Emily Sano then slapped an RBI single down the right field line to plate Fitzgerald and then Brooke Hauck laced a double into the left center gap to score Loomis and complete the comeback and take game one 9-8.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia struck first in the third inning after Emily Sano tallied an infield single to plate Alexia Fitzgerald and grab a 1-0 lead. 
  • Jaclyn Barbera then followed Sano with an RBI double down the left field line to score Sano and make it a 2-0 ballgame. 
  • The Golden Wolves tacked three more on in the home half of the fourth inning after Taylor McClain ripped an RBI single into left field and Brooke Hauck recorded a sac fly to score Fitzgerald and McClain then came around to score via a Mustang error to make it 5-0. 
  • Kelsey Racine shut the Mustangs down in the final three at bats to secure the 5-0 shutout victory and secure the series sweep.
