Mustangs Down Golden Wolves, 22-8

Reading, Pa. (April 13, 2024) - Stevenson University (9-4, 3-0) used a ten goal first quarter to down Alvernia University (4-9, 0-3) 22-8 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Stevenson, who extended its winning streak to seven with today's win, scored early and often in the first quarter to jump out to a 10-1 lead through the first frame. After trailing 14-3 at the half, Alvernia fought back in and trailed by seven heading into the fourth quarter. But, the Mustangs blanked Alvernia in the final 15 minutes while scoring seven more goals en route to the 22-8 win over the Golden Wolves on Alvernia's senior day.

How it Happened
  • The Mustangs got on the board just under 90 seconds into the action and led 9-0 with 2:34 to play in the quarter. Alvernia got on the board with a goal from Sherrin Smith with 1:59 to play in the quarter, but Stevenson scored with 37 seconds left in the opening frame to take a 10-1 lead into the second.
  • Stevenson scored the opening two goals of the second quarter to take a 12-1 lead with 11 minutes to play in the quarter. A goal from Mackenzie McKinney brought Alvernia back within ten, but Stevenson pushed it back to 11 with Kara Yarusso's 50th goal of the season for the Mustangs with 5:16 to play in the quarter.
  • Haleigh Lackner cut the deficit back down to ten once again for Alvernia with her 40th goal of the season with 2:40 to play before the half. But Stevenson had the final say of the opening half and scored with 20 seconds on the clock to take a 14-3 lead into the half.
  • The Mustangs opened the third quarter with a player-up goal. But, a goal from Lackner with 10:05 to play in the quarter sparked a run for Alvernia. A goal from Meagan Moky brought Alvernia back within ten, and a player-up goal from McKinney off the feed of Lackner put a pause to the running clock and made it a nine goal game, 15-6 with 3:28 to play in the quarter.
  • Alvernia then put its foot on the gas in the final minute of the third quarter, with Smith and McKinney each scoring last second goals for the Golden Wolves. McKinney's goal came with 1.5 seconds on the game clock and brought Alvernia seven, 15-8, heading into the final frame.
  • All momentum Alvernia picked up to close the third quarter faded away in the fourth quarter with three early goals in the quarter from the Mustangs to reignite the running clock, 18-8, as Alvernia struggled to maintain possession.
  • Stevenson went on to score four more goals in the quarter to come away with the 22-8 final as the Mustangs blanked Alvernia in the fourth quarter.
Inside the Box Score
  • Lackner, McKinney, and Smith each finished with three points for Alvernia. Smith and Lackner each had two goals and an assist, and McKinney finished with three goals for the hat trick.
  • Hannah Wolfe finished with six saves in goal for Alvernia and had a team-high two ground balls.
  • Stevenson's Yarusso finished with eight goals and seven draw controls.
