Golden Wolves Roll Past Pride, 12-2

Chester, Pa (April 19, 2024) - Alvernia University (21-11, 13-3) rolled to a 12-2 victory over Widener University (11-18, 7-9) Friday afternoon in a game one of a MAC Commonwealth baseball series at Widener. 

The Golden Wolves tallied 15 hits and pushed 12 runs across the plate en route to the ten run victory. Six different Golden Wolves drove in runs including three RBI performances from Ben Houghton and Matt Edwards. Chris Sasso tossed six innings on the hill for Alvernia, scattered just four hits and allowed only one run to earn his fifth win of the season.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves got things going early in the game after Matt Edwards smoked a two RBI double deep into the right center gap to make it a 2-0 game early. 
  • Alvernia tacked another on in the top of the second after Luke Jones singled and Logan Nelson scored thanks to a Widener error to make it a 3-0 ballgame. 
  • The Golden Wolves put up four more runs in the third to extend their advantage to seven. Ben Houghton started things off with an RBI single to left center that scored Mike Ramundo and then Garrett Hunter singled to drive in Houghton. 
  • Jones capped things off with another RBI single that allowed Bobby Hansen to score and gave Alvernia a 7-0 lead. 
  • The Pride grabbed one back in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single to center to make it a 7-1 game. 
  • Alvernia responded with three more in the sixth after back to back RBI doubles by Ramundo and Jason Kelly. Ramundo ripped a two RBI double to right field and Kelly followed him with a RBI double to right as well to extend the lead to 10-1. 
  • Houghton then hit a solo homer into the left center gap to make it 11-1 Golden Wolves. 
  • The Golden Wolves tacked one more insurance run on in the eighth when Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to left that allowed Jake Chapman to score and make it a 12-1 ballgame. 
  • The Pride pushed one across the plate in the bottom of the eighth after an RBI single to make it 12-2 Golden Wolves. 
  • Timmy Hitchcock came on in relief in the ninth and shut down the Pride in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 12-2 victory in game one of the MAC Commonwealth series.
