Golden Wolves Split with Pride, Secure Series

Reading, Pa (April 20, 2024) - Alvernia University (22-12, 14-4) split with Widener University (12-19, 8-10) Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth baseball doubleheader in Angelica Park. 

The Pride grabbed game one of the doubleheader 4-2 after a four run sixth inning but the Golden Wolves responded in game two with an 8-4 victory to secure the 2-1 series victory over the Pride and clinch a MAC Commonwealth playoff spot.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Mike Ramundo RBI double and a Ben Houghton RBI single up the middle to put the Golden Wolves up 2-0.
  • The Pride took the lead in the top half of the sixth after they pushed four runs across the plate. An RBI double started things off, followed by an RBI single into left to tie it at two. Another RBI double and an RBI single through the right side saw the Pride grab the two run, 4-2 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves were unable to push any runs across in the final two at bats as the Pride grabbed game one 4-2 and evened the series at one game a piece.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a Widener error. Garrett Hunter lined out to the second baseman who then attempted to double up Houghton at second but threw the ball away and allowed Edwards to score from third to make it 1-0 Golden Wolves. 
  • The Golden Wolves made it 2-0 in the third when Evan Thomas singled to left field and plated Luke Jones to extend the lead to two. 
  • The Pride cut the lead in half in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI groundout to short, making it a 2-1 game. 
  • Widener leveled the game in the sixth after an Alvernia error allowed a run to score to tie the game at two. 
  • The Golden Wolves responded immediately with four runs in the home half of the sixth to regain the lead. Bobby Hansen started things off by slapping a double down the right side that scored Houghton. Hunter followed him up with an RBI single to right center and then Logan Nelson mashed a two run homer into the trees in left field to give the Golden Wolves a four run, 6-2 lead. 
  • The Pride bounced back with one in the top of the seventh thanks to a Ryan Weaver solo shot to left to make it 6-3. 
  • Widener tacked on more on in the eighth after an Alvernia error to come within two, 6-4. 
  • Alvernia then tallied two more insurance runs in the eighth thanks to a Nelson RBI double and then Luke Jones followed Nelson with a ground rule double to trade places with Nelson and push the lead back to four, 8-4. 
  • Brad Coley came on in relief in the ninth inning and shut the Pride down 1,2,3 to secure the 8-4 victory and the series for Alvernia.

Of Note
  • With the series victory and only three MAC Commonwealth games to go, Alvernia clinched a playoff spot and can finish no lower than the two seed. 
  • The Golden Wolves have won their last five MAC Commonwealth series and have won 15 of their last 20 games.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Monday when they host Juniata in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.
