Blazers Down Golden Wolves, 17-11

Frederick, Md. (April 20, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-10, 1-4) dropped a MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse matchup to Hood College (6-9, 2-3) 17-11, Saturday afternoon at Hood. 

The Blazers held a 8-3 lead at the half but five goals from the Golden Wolves in the third closed the gap to four, 12-8. Hood would out score Alvernia 5-3 in the fourth to secure the victory. 

How it Happened 
  • The Golden Wolves opened the scoring after a Sherrin Smith goal in the first three minutes of the game to make it 1-0 Alvernia. 
  • The Blazers then ripped off four straight goals to end the first quarter with a 4-1 lead. 
  • Hood kept rolling with two goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter to push the lead to five, 6-1. 
  • Haleigh Lackner ended the Hood scoring run with an unassisted goal to make it 6-2 with 11 minutes left in the half. 
  • The Blazers responded with two goals in the next six minutes to push the lead to six, 8-2 with under seven to play in the half. 
  • Smith tallied her second goal of the game with 22 seconds left in the half but the Blazers held a five goal, 8-3 lead at the half. 
  • The Golden Wolves came out and scored two quick goals in the first three minutes of the half to cut the lead to three, 8-5 with Meagan Moky and Lackner scoring the goals. 
  • Hood's Olivia Pickett responded with a goal to make it a 9-5 game with ten minutes left in the quarter. 
  • Alvernia responded with three quick goals in the next three minutes to pull within one thanks to two from Smith and another from Moky to make it a 9-8 game. 
  • Hood ripped off three goals in the final seven minutes of the quarter to push the lead back to four, 12-8 heading into the fourth. 
  • Lackner started the fourth quarter with a goal in the first 32 seconds thanks to an assist from Gracie Brower to make it 12-9. 
  • Hood continued to answer, netting two more goals within two minutes to push the lead back to five, 14-9. 
  • Lackner then scored her fourth of the day to make it 14-10 with 12 minutes left. 
  • The Blazers then scored three straight to make it a seven goal, 17-10 lead. 
  • Smith tallied her fifth goal of the game in the final three minutes to make it 17-11 but it was not enough as the Blazers secured the victory. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Smith recorded a career day, she tied her career high in goals with five and went 3-4 on free position shots. 
  • Lackner finished with four goals, six ground balls, two caused turnovers and a team high six draw controls. 
  • Moky added two goals, three ground balls, a caused turnover and three draw controls. 
  • Mackenzie McKinney, Sophia Ruocco and Brower all recorded assists for the Golden Wolves. 
  • Hannah Wolfe recorded nine saves in net for Alvernia.
