Alvernia Drops MAC Commonwealth Opener to Widener, 15-4

Kenney Breaks Faceoff Record in Setback

Chester, Pa (April 6, 2024) - Alvernia University (4-6, 0-1) dropped its MAC Commonwealth opener to Widener University (2-8, 1-0) 15-4, on Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action at Widener. 

The Pride held the Golden Wolves to just one goal per quarter en route to the 15-4 victory over Alvernia to open up conference play. 

How it Happened 
  • Widener jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Cam Hazel, Nick Brennan and Nicholas Knepp. 
  • The Golden Wolves got on the board with five seconds left in the first quarter when Ryan Gilman found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Jack Keenan as the Pride took a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. 
  • The Pride pushed the lead to 7-1 after Wesley Sporer and Bryant Matis each recorded two unassisted goals in the first ten minutes of the second quarter. 
  • Gilman tallied his second goal of the game with under two minutes to play in the half as Widener took the 7-2 lead into the halftime break. 
  • Colin McFadyen opened up the second half with a goal in the first minute of play to cut the Widener lead to four, 7-3. 
  • Widener responded with four straight goals to end the third quarter with an 11-3 lead over the Golden Wolves. 
  • Widener tallied three goals in five minutes to push the lead to 14-3 with six minutes to play. 
  • McFadyen ended the Widener scoring run at seven when he scored his second goal of the contest to make it a 14-4 game. 
  • The Pride tallied one more goal in the final minute of the game to secure the 15-4 victory over Alvernia. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Ryan Gilman and Colin McFadyen led Alvernia with two goals apiece. 
  • Jack Keenan recorded the only assist for Alvernia. 
  • Dane Sabarese recorded 21 saves in net for the Golden Wolves. Sabarese's 21 saves is his second highest total in 2024. 
  • Jack Kenney recorded 15 faceoff wins for the Golden Wolves and broke the career faceoff wins record. Kenney now sits at 278 faceoff wins in his career and broke Alex Evans' record of 275 set in 2016. Kenney broke Evans' record in 40 less games.
