Golden Wolves Drop Conference Opener to Pride, 14-7

Reading, Pa. (April 6, 2024) - Alvernia University (4-7, 0-1) dropped its MAC Commonwealth opener to Widener University (5-6, 1-0) 14-7 on Saturday afternoon in conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves and Pride battled out a back-and-forth first half with the Pride taking a 7-5 lead into the half. Widener then held Alvernia scoreless for nearly 29 minutes in the second half to pull away for the 14-7 win.

How it Happened
  • The Pride struck first with a goal just over four minutes into the action, but Alvernia evened it up at 1-1 with a free-position goal from Haleigh Lackner with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Pride retook the lead, 2-1, just 15 seconds later, but Alvernia evened it up at 2-2 with a goal from Sherrin Smith with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Alvernia then took the lead, 3-2, with a player-up goal from Olivia McCambly with 4:55 left in the first. Alvernia held the lead the rest of the quarter and took a 3-2 lead into the second frame. 
  • The Pride scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead, but back-to-back free position goals from Lackner gave Alvernia the lead back, 5-4, with 6:14 remaining in the first half.
  • The Pride then scored three straight to close out the first half and take a 7-5 lead into the break.
  • The Pride came out of halftime and took advantage of a slew of Alvernia turnovers. The Pride outscored Alvernia 2-0 in the quarter and took a 9-5 lead into the fourth frame.
  • Widener built its lead up to seven, 12-5, with 5:22 to play. A goal from Alvernia's Lindsay Kerchner put an end to Widener's run with 1:39 to play, but the Pride scored off the ensuing draw to push their lead back up to seven, 13-6, with 1:26 to play. Widener then scored 23 seconds later to make it a 14-6 game with 1:03 to go.
  • Alvernia scored the final goal of the game - a free position goal from Olivia McCambly with less than a second to play - for the 14-7 final.
Inside the Box Score
  • Haleigh Lackner led Alvernia with three goals and an assist. She also had four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and five ground balls.
  • Olivia McCambly finished with two goals
  • Meagan Moky had three caused turnovers and six draw controls. 
  • Hannah Wolfe made a season and career-high nine saves in net for Alvernia.
