Alvernia and Muhlenberg Play to 0-0 Draw in Season Opener

Allentown, Pa (August 30, 2024) - Alvernia University (0-0-1) and Muhlenberg College (0-0-1) played to a 0-0 draw Friday night in a non-conference men's soccer matchup at Muhlenberg.

Alvernia goalkeeper Evan Solley tallied a career night in goal with 12 saves, nine of which came in the final 15 minutes of the contest to keep the Mules out of the goal and secure a draw for the Golden Wolves in their 2024 season opener.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia was shown a red card in the first ten minutes of the contest after a last-ditch defending effort, dropping them down to ten men for the remainder of the game.
  • Golden Wolves keeper Evan Solley kept the Mules out of the goal on the ensuing free kick to keep the game scoreless.
  • Connor Kraycik recorded Alvernia's first shot on goal of the season after he ripped a free kick from outside the box toward the upper left corner of the Muhlenberg goal but Muhlenberg keeper Ben Mulford made the save to deny Kraycik.
  • Solley made three saves in the first half on all three of Muhlenberg's shots as the Mules and the Golden Wolves were knotted at zero after 45 minutes of play.
  • The Golden Wolves defense held the Muhlenberg offense at bay for the first 30 minutes of the second half before Solley made an unbelievable triple save with 15 minutes to go in the game to keep the game tied at zero.
  • The Mules whipped a corner into the Alvernia box that was headed toward the top corner of the goal, Solley threw his right hand into the corner to deny the header, the ball then fell to a Muhlenberg player who fired a shot on goal, Solley stopped the second shot and then denied the third rebound at point blank range to keep the Mules off the scoresheet.
  • The three shots on goal were Muhlenberg's first shots on goal of the second half.
  • Solley made yet another great save in the final ten minutes of the game after a hard shot from the Mules came at Solley, he then deflected the shot over the crossbar to keep it out of the net.
  • Solley made his 12th save of the night on a one on one with Muhlenberg's Sim Dorsey with 37 seconds left in the game to deny the Mules yet again as the game ended the game nil-nil.
