Golden Wolves Shutout Rams in Home Opener

Reading, Pa (September 1, 2024) - Alvernia University (1-0-1) netted three goals Sunday afternoon to take down Farmingdale State College (1-1) 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer matchup at Alvernia.

Alvernia tallied two goals in the first half and then added one more for insurance in the 54th minute to secure the 3-0 shutout victory over the Rams in Alvernia's home opener.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves got things going earlier when Ryan Cogill drew a foul in the box to secure a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Cogill stepped up and buried his attempt into the bottom right corner of the goal and past the diving keeper to put Alvernia up 1-0.
  • Alvernia rattled off a couple more shots in the next 20 minutes of the game before Zeke Zambrano scored an absolute thunderbolt of a goal to put the Golden Wolves up 2-0 just before the half. Zambrano picked the pocket of a Rams player, took a few dribbles and fired his shot from nearly 30 yards away into the top left corner of the goal to extend the lead to two.
  • Nick Colletti and Travis Slear both recorded shots in the final ten minutes of the half but were not able to convert as the Golden Wolves took a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
  • Alvernia came out of the break flying and tacked on a third goal in the first ten minutes of the second half. Joshue Avila stole the ball from a Farmingdale State player, drove down the left sideline and then played a ball across the box to Dominic Flowers who fired his shot past the keeper and into the back of the net to make it 3-0.
  • Farmingdale State fired five shots at the Alvernia goal in the final 30 minutes of the game but the Alvernia defense and Evan Solley stayed true and kept the Rams out of the goal to secure the shutout for the second straight game.

Inside the Box Score
