Golden Wolves Sweep Cyclones in Season Opener

Bethlehem, Pa (August 30, 2024) - Alvernia University (1-0) opened their 2024 campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Centenary University (0-1) Friday evening in a non-conference women's volleyball matchup hosted at Moravian University. 

The Golden Wolves took all three sets by a least nine points with a 25-13 victory in the first set and back to back 25-16 performances in sets two and three to secure the sweep in the season opener at the Moravian Greyhound Premiere Invitational. 

How it Happened
 
  • The Golden Wolves jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set thanks to two kills from Kayleigh Kehler, a service ace by Hailey McDevitt and a few Centenary errors forced a Centenary timeout. 
  • Alvernia and Centenary went on an even 7-7 run in the next 14 points of the set with the Golden Wolves still holding a six point, 14-8 lead. 
  • Alvernia then ripped off an 11-5 scoring run to end the first set and take the set by a score of 25-13. Allison Wolf tallied two kills during the run and Patricia Falar and Allie Evangelista both recorded one kill as Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • The Cyclones started the second set by taking a 3-1 lead but the Golden Wolves bounced right back with an 11-4 run that gave them a 12-7 lead. Falar, McDevitt and Kehler all recorded kills for the Golden Wolves during the run. 
  • Centenary then grabbed five of the next nine points to cut the Alvernia lead to just four, 16-12 midway through the second set. 
  • Alvernia then recorded another impressive scoring run to end the second set, this one a 9-4 run as they took the second set by a score of 25-16. Five Golden Wolves tallied kills during the run with Kehler leading the way with two, Evangilista and Falar added one and Olivia Rohrbaugh and Jamie Pierce both added kills as well. 
  • Alvernia and Centenary split the first six points of the third set before the Golden Wolves ripped off six straight points to force a Cyclone timeout and take a 9-3 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves kept scoring points in the third set, taking seven of the next 12 points scored to push the lead to 16-8. Kehler hammered home two kills and Kayla Newcomb also tallied a kill. 
  • Alvernia continued to control the third set with a 6-3 scoring run that pushed the lead to double digits, 22-11. 
  • The Golden Wolves then grabbed the third set by a score of 25-16 with Olivia Rohrbaugh tallying the final kill of the match to secure the 3-0 sweep of the Cyclones. 

Inside the Box Score 
 
  • Kayleigh Kehler led the way offensively for the Golden Wolves with a team high 11 kills and also added a team high eight digs and two aces. 
  • Patricia Falar recorded four kills, added a team high ten assists, two aces and two blocks. 
  • Allie Evangelista tallied four kills and a team high five blocks. 
  • Julianna McGlone posted a team high five service aces.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow for games two and three of the Moravian Greyhound Premiere Invitational. They will take on hosts Moravian at 12:00 PM and then will play Lancaster Bible College at 2:00 PM.
