Big Second Half Powers Alvernia Past Penn State Berks, 5-1

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2024) - Alvernia University (3-1-1) scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-1 win over Penn State Berks (1-3) on Tuesday night in non-conference men's soccer action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves got on the board in the 14th minute, and then tallied three goals in nine minutes to open the second half. The Lions spoiled the shutout in the 88th minute, but Alvernia added one more goal late in the 89th minute for the 5-1 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia peppered Penn State early before Connor Kraycik broke through for the Golden Wolves in the 14th minute. Matthew Kerr sent the ball in and found Kraycik for the header goal to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.
  • Neither team was able to pressure much on goal for the remainder of the half. Alvernia's Evan Solley did make a spectacular diving save off the right post on a late corner opportunity by the Lions to keep the game at 1-0 in favor of the Golden Wolves.
  • Alvernia opened the flood-gates in the opening minutes of the second half, and Dominic Flowers got things started. Flowers gathered a loose ball off the foot of a Berks defender and fired it into net to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead just 90 seconds ino the half.
  • Ryan Cogill kept things going in the 51st minute after firing in a missile of a shot on the PK line after being awarded the penalty kick opportunity on a foul inside the box. Cogill's successful PK made it a 3-0 game with still nearly 40 minutes to play.
  • Five minutes later, Cogill found the back of the net once again. Flowers picked up a short insert on a corner kick opportunity and passed it up to Cogill, Cogill had a quick finish with a shot inside the right post to make it a 4-0 game.
  • Berks ended the shutout bid for Alvernia with a putback goal off the crossbar on a free kick in the 88th minute. But, Alvernia retook the four goal lead on a goal from Joseph Washington with 1:05 to play as Alvernia took the 5-1 win.
