Alvernia Downs Cedar Crest in Straight Sets

Reading, Pa (September 10, 2024) - Alvernia University (6-2) took down Cedar Crest College (3-3) 3-0, in a non-conference women's volleyball match Tuesday evening on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

The Golden Wolves took the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-19. The Falcons battled in the deciding set but Alvernia eventually pulled away and grabbed the third set 25-22 to secure the 3-0 sweep of the Falcons. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia nabbed an early lead in the first set, 5-4 before a Julianna McGlone kill led to a 12-2 scoring run that gave the Golden Wolves a commanding, 16-5 lead. 
  • The Falcons cut the lead to six, 16-10 after scoring five straight points but Alvernia responded with five straight points of its own to make it a 21-10 game. 
  • The Falcons scored eight of the final 12 points of the set but the Golden Wolves held on to secure set one, 25-18. 
  • Alvernia took another early lead in the second set, 8-4 but the Falcons tallied a 9-2 scoring run to grab the lead, 13-10. 
  • The Golden Wolves bounced back with eight of the next ten points thanks to three kills from Allison Wolf and kills from Lindsay Ferguson and Cierra Roberts, Alvernia regained the lead, 18-15. 
  • Cedar Crest would cut it to a one point game, 19-18, before the Golden Wolves ripped off six of the last seven points of the set to take the second set 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Patricia Falar tallied a service ace to seal the set. 
  • Cedar Crest were the ones to jump out to a lead early in the third set, scoring ten of the first 14 points as they held a 10-4 lead. 
  • Alvernia responded with seven of the next eight points of the set to tie the set at 11. Kayleigh Kehler tallied two aces and a kill during the stretch. 
  • The Golden Wolves then recorded six of the next nine points of the set to take the lead, 17-14. But, the Falcons tallied four straight points to take the lead, 18-17 late in the final set. 
  • A Ferguson kill then sparked an 8-4 run to end the third set, 25-22 and secure the 3-0 sweep for the Golden Wolves. Kehler recorded two kills during the run, Roberts added another and Hailey McDevitt hammered home a kill to secure the match. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Hailey McDevitt posted another solid offensive day for the Golden Wolves with a team high seven kills, 16 assists and also added 11 digs. 
  • Abigail McGinley recorded 14 digs, three assists and also added an ace. 
  • Lindsay Ferguson tallied four blocks, Kayleigh Kehler recorded six kills, two aces and 12 digs.
