Alvernia Goes 2-0 in Home Tri-Match

Reading, Pa (September 14, 2024) - Alvernia University (8-2) went 2-0 Saturday in a home tri-match with New Jersey City University (2-5) and Delaware Valley University (4-4), taking both matches by a 3-0 margin in non-conference women's volleyball action on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.   

Match 1: NJCU: 0, Alvernia: 3

How it Happened:
  • Alvernia led early in set one, 14-7, following an ace from Hailey McDevitt to give Alvernia the seven point lead. The Gothic Knights called a timeout to regroup, but another ace from McDevitt made it a15-7 set. Alvernia then took the set on a 7-1 run off the serve of Patricia Falar to take the early 1-0 match lead. A kill from Jamie Pierce locked up set one for the Golden Wolves on the assist of Falar. 
  • The Golden Wolves got off to a hot start once again in the second set of the match. Alvernia took an early 11-3, with McDevitt leading the early charge with two kills, an ace, and three points off of her serve. Later in the set, Alvernia maintained its lead at 19-11, and a kill from Allie Evangelista made it a 20-11 set.  Three straight points by the Gothic Knights held Alvernia at 23 points on the set, but the Golden Wolves closed it out by forcing two attack errors by the Gothic Knights to take the set, 25-16, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Alvernia jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the third set on a kill from Evangelista, but the Gothic Knights closed the gap to one point, 19-18 and 20-19, later in the set. A kill from Evangelists off the set of Marli Emrich gave Alvernia the two point lead, 21-19. A Kayleigh Kehler kill and Allison Wolf ace made it a 23-20 game for Alvernia, and then two more kills from Kehler closed out the set, 25-21, and sealed the 3-0 win for the Golden Wolves.

Inside the Box Score
  • Kehler led Alvernia with seven kills off of 18 attacks; she also had eight digs.
  • Patricia Falar finished with 11 assists and six aces, as well as eight digs and three kills.
  • Marli Emrich finished with nine assists and three digs

Match 2: Del Val: 0, Alvernia: 3

How it Happened 
  • Delaware Valley grabbed the early lead in the first set of the final match of the day, 4-1 before a Presley Carnes kill sparked an 18-4 scoring run for the Golden Wolves to make it an 11 point, 19-8 lead. The Aggies grabbed four of the next six points to make it 21-12 but Alvernia ended the set on a 5-1 run to take the first set 25-13. 
  • Del Val took another early lead in the second set, this one an 8-3 lead. The Aggies continued to add to their lead, going back and forth with Alvernia as the Aggies held a 15-9 lead and forced an Alvernia timeout. The Golden Wolves responded with a 12-6 stretch coming out of the timeout that leveled the set at 21. Allison Wolf recorded three kills, Hailey McDevitt tallied two and Julianna McGlone, Caroline Buggy and Lindsay Ferguson all tallied a kill for Alvernia. Alvernia then ended the set on a 6-4 run to take the second set 27-25 and grab a 2-0 lead in the match. 
  • The Golden Wolves and the Aggies traded points back and forth to start the third set before Alvernia jumped out to a 14-4 lead but Del Val fought back to cut the lead to single digits, 19-10. The Golden Wolves then closed out the match with a 6-3 scoring run with two kills from McGlone to take the third set 25-13 and secure the 3-0 sweep of the Aggies. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Julianna McGlone led the way offensively for the Golden Wolves in the second match with a team high ten kills, she committed just three errors on 30 attacks. She also added eight digs and an ace. 
  • Patricia Falar led with 14 assists, added nine digs and two aces. 
  • Abigail McGinley tallied a team high 15 digs and added five assists. 
  • Hailey McDevitt recorded eight kills, eight assists and ten digs in the match.

  • Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Washington College to take on the Shorewomen at 7:00 PM.
