Monarchs Down Golden Wolves, 35-10

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2024) - Alvernia University (0-3, 0-2) dropped a 35-10 decision to King's College (2-1, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Football action at Alvernia.

Alvernia trailed 21-10 at the half following a safety and a Dachan Thompson touchdown paired with a Colin Payne two-point conversion. But, the Monarchs came out of the half and shut Alvernia down as King's scored two unanswered touchdowns for the 35-10 win.

How it Happened
  • King's and Alvernia both traded drives through the first ten minutes of action. Alvernia was forced to punt the ball away with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter. The Monarchs used a 20-yard completion and a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty against Alvernia to move the ball down the field as the second quarter got underway. King's needed just one play - a 19-yard touchdown reception - to open the second quarter to get on the board and take a 7-0 lead.
  • King's forced a punt again on Alvernia's ensuing drive and King's got right back to work. The Monarchs found the end zone following a 40-yard reception and a 17-yard touchdown reception to take a 14-0 lead with 10:43 to play in the second quarter.
  • The Monarchs then scored on their third possession in a row on a six-yard keeper from quarterback Russell Minor-Shaw to make it a 21-0 game with 7:20 to play in the second quarter.
  • Alvernia made a stop on King's next drive and caught a break on a long and high snap on the punt that rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
  • The Golden Wolves got some more help from the Monarchs on the next drive. King's was called for a facemask on the kickoff to tack an extra 15 yards onto a 14-yard return by Zach Ayers, which set the Golden Wolves up on the King's 47-yard line. An Ozmere Jones 19-yard rush turned into a 34-yard gain following another facemask penalty on the Monarchs to put Alvernia on the King's 16-yard line. Payne then found Thompson on a 16-yard fade route into the endzone to make it a 21-8 game. Alvernia then converted the 2-point attempt on a Payne keeper to make it a 21-10 game.
  • Alvernia forced a turnover on downs on the next King's drive, but could not do anything on the two-minute drill as the Monarchs took the 21-10 lead into the half.
  • Alvernia made a big defensive stop to open the third quarter, but Alvernia was forced to punt the ball away once again on the next drive. King's rushed the punt and were able to make the block and take back over on the Alvenaria 4-yard line. The Monarchs took the lead one play later on a 4-yard rushing touchdown to make it 28-10 with eight minutes to play in the third.
  • Alvernia struggled to get anything going in the third quarter as the Monarchs held the Golden Wolves to just 22 yards of offense. Alvernia entered the fourth quarter trailing 28-10.
  • King's opened the fourth quarter with a six minute drive that culminated in two-yard touchdown run to give King's the 35-10 lead.
  • Alvernia didn't threaten the reset of the way as the Golden Wolves were held to just 34 yards of offense in the quarter. King's walked away with the 35-10 win as Alvernia dropped to 0-3.
