Alvernia Falls to Penn State Berks, 1-0

Reading, PA (Sept. 25, 2024) - Penn State Berks (1-6-1) scored in the 69th minute to down Alvernia University (4-5), 1-0, on Wednesday night in non-conference women's soccer action at Penn State Berks.

With the loss, Alvernia drops to 4-5 with one week of non-conference play remaining. Penn State Berks picked up its first win after an 0-6-1 start.

How it Happened
  • Both teams went scoreless through the first half. The Lions and Golden Wolves were even with four shots apiece, but Alvernia held the advantage in shots on goal, 4-2. Haley Dougherty came off the bench and recorded two shots on goal, and Tayler Flaherty and Macy McDonough each had one shot on goal.
  • After a back-and-forth first 25 minutes of the second half, the Lions took advantage of two yellow cards by Alvernia within 90 seconds. The Lions then scored off a free kick by Devon Deery, which came off an Alvernia yellow card, on a shot from near midfield to make it a 1-0 game with 20 minutes to play.
  • Alvernia was held to just one shot - an attempt by Gianna Ordanoff that was blocked - in the final ten minutes as the Lions came away with the 1-0 win.

  • McDonough and Dougherty led Alvernia with two shots on goal each.
  • Brynn Bock finished with five saves in net.
  • Alvernia out-shot the Lions, 11-9. But, both teams were even with six shots on goal apiece.

  • Alvernia is back in action on Saturday at home hosting King's College at 2:00 PM. The Monarchs enter Saturday with a 1-4-3 record.
