Alvernia Scores Two Unanswered to Tie King's, 2-2

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2024) - Alvernia University (3-6-1) scored two unanswered goals to force the 2-2 draw with King's College (1-4-4) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Alvernia.

The Monarchs led 2-0 with just over 36 minutes to play. Alvernia got on the board with a Kalyn Keen goal in the 57th minute and then Tayler Flaherty scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute off the assist of Keen.

The tie marked Alvernia's first tie of the season, while it marked the fourth of the year for the Monarchs.

How it Happened
  • Neither side had too many opportunities in the first half. Tayler Flaherty had Alvernia's only two shots on goal of the first half, both within about two minutes of each other 15 minutes into the half. Her first attempt was her best look after Haley Dougherty found her on a great cross field run, but the Monarch keeper made a great stop to keep the Golden Wolves off the board.
  • The Monarchs had four shots on goal in the first half, but Brynn Bock made all four saves for Alvernia to send the game into the second half tied at 0-0.
  • King's came out of the break and took early control. In the 47th minute, Jessica Juarez sent in a pass to Maya Parker, who was making a run up the right side. Parker took the pass and fired into the opposite corner of the goal to put the Monarchs on the board.
  • Dougherty had two good looks in the 52nd minute, but one attempt was saved and the other went high.
  • The Monarchs struck again in the 54th minute as Parker netted her second of the afternoon. Parker shot from 15 yards out, and Bock dove with the shot. But, the ball rolled off the tip of Bock's fingers and into net to give King's the 2-0 lead.
  • Alvernia responded about three minutes later. The Golden Wolves were awarded a free kick off a King's yellow card, and Keen took the attempt for Alvernia. Keen fired directly on goal and buried a shot into the upper right corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game with just under 34 minutes to play.
  • The Golden Wolves then tied the game in the 82nd minute. Keen took an initial shot off the right post towards the left side of the net. The King's keeper made the initial save, but the shot deflected back to Flaherty. Flaherty quickly shot the ball into net to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Neither team was able to break the tie in the final eight minutes.
