Michael’s Hat Trick Leads Alvernia Past Kean, 3-0

Union, NJ (Sept. 28, 2024) - Alvernia University (6-3) sophomore Ava Michael recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Golden Wolves to a 3-0 win over Kean University (3-6) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Kean.

The game was locked at 0-0 through the first half before Michael and the Golden Wolves unleashed just 58 seconds into the third quarter. Alvernia held the Cougars to just five shots on goal in the second half as the Golden Wolves recorded their fourth shutout win of the season.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia had plenty of opportunities in the opening minutes of the first quarter as the Golden Wolves were awarded five corners in the first nine minutes of action. But, the Cougars made three saves to keep Alvernia off the board going into the second quarter.
  • After a scoreless second quarter, Alvernia broke things open to open the second half. Ava Michael needed just 58 seconds into the quarter to put Alvernia on the board. Michael took a pass in from Hailey Miller and fired opposite cage and into net to put Alvernia on the board, 1-0.
  • Less than a minute later, Michael struck again to make it a 2-0 game just two minutes into the third quarter. This time Kelsy McClintock assisted as Michael shot in from the penalty stroke line.
  • A defensive save by Abbie Buck a few minutes later kept the Cougars off the board. Kean pushed in the final 90 seconds of the quarter, but Lexi Boettcher made four saves for Alvernia in less than 20 seconds to keep it a 2-0 game going into the final frame.
  • The Cougars and Golden Wolves traded shots on goal to open the fourth quarter, but both attempts were saved.
  • Alvernia then scored an insurance goal in the 55th minute as Michael netted her third of the afternoon. Michael finished the hat trick on a 1v1 goal against the Kean goalie.
  • The Golden Wolves did not allow a shot the rest of the way as Alvernia came away with the 3-0 win.
