Golden Wolves Fend Off Blue Jays, 3-2

Reading, Pa (October 1, 2024) - Alvernia University (7-3) took down Elizabethtown College (4-6), 3-2 Tuesday night in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Alvernia University.

The Golden Wolves netted goals in the first, second and third quarters en route to the 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves struck first just six minutes into the first quarter when Kelsy McClintock found the stick of Ava Michael who fired a shot into the back of the goal to make it 1-0 Golden Wolves.
  • Alvernia recorded two shots and four penalty corners in the final ten minutes of the first quarter but were unable to find a second as Alvernia headed to the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays then found a leveler with under five minutes to go in the first half when Hannah Long assisted Drew Bridges to make it a 1-1 game late in the first half.
  • Alvernia answered almost immediately after Olivia Hess picked up a loose ball in the Elizabethtown defensive zone, she then played a beautiful centered pass to McClintock who ripped an absolute rocket past the Blue Jays goalie and into the back of the net to give Alvernia a 2-1 advantage heading into the half.
  • Alvernia added to its lead in the first three minutes of the third quarter when Hess put her name on the score sheet. Hess gathered another loose ball in the Etown circle, she then flipped the ball past the goalie and into the goal to make it a 3-1 game.
  • The Blue Jays pulled within one in the final three minutes of the third quarter after Drew Bridges fired a shot at the Alvernia net that deflected off an Alvernia defender's stick and into the goal to make it a one goal game, 3-2.
  • The Golden Wolves defense held the Blue Jays to just one shot and one penalty corner in the final 15 minutes of action but Alvernia's Lexi Boettcher tallied a save on the only shot on goal to secure the 3-2 victory for the Golden Wolves.
