River Hawks Score Two Late Goals to Take 3-1 Win Over Alvernia

Selinsgrove, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2024) - Susquehanna University (7-4) scored two goals in the final six minutes to take a 3-1 win over Alvernia University (7-4) on Tuesday night in non-conference field hockey action at Susquehanna.

After a scoreless first half, Susquehanna got on the board in the 34th minute and held a 1-0 lead for nearly 20 more minutes of game time. Alvernia equalized it at 1-1 on a Gianna DeGregory goal in the 53rd minute, but the tie did not last long. Susquehanna retook the lead less than a minute later and made it a two goal game, 3-1, with a goal in the 56th minute. Alvernia had two shots late, but neither went on goal as Susquehanna took the 3-1 win.

How it Happened
  • Neither the River Hawks or Golden Wolves could find the back of the net in the first half. Susquehanna outshot the Golden Wolves 13-6 in the first half, but Lexi Boettcher made seven saves for Alvernia in the opening 30 minutes to keep the game at 0-0 going into the second half.
  • The River Hawks wasted little time getting on the board in the second half. After Alvernia was assessed a yellow card in the 33rd, Susquehanna took advantage of the player-up opportunity and broke the 0-0 tie in the 34th minute on a put-back goal from Mady Quigley.
  • The River Hawks nearly took a 2-0 lead later in the third quarter after being awarded a penalty stroke opportunity. But, the attempt went wide to keep the River Hawks lead at 1-0.
  • Alvernia did not get a shot on goal in the third quarter as the game moved into the final frame with the River Hawks leading 1-0.
  • Both teams went back and forth with possession in the opening half of the fourth quarter until Alvernia was awarded a penalty corner in the 53rd minute. Kathryn Palmer received the corner from Olivia Hess and Gianna DeGregory fired a shot in on goal to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The tie lasted just under a minute as Susquehanna scored on another put-back and then added an insurance goal two minutes later to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Alvernia did not get another shot on goal the rest of the way as the River Hawks took the 3-1 win.
