Golden Wolves Win Five Set Thriller Over Lions

Reading, Pa (September 3, 2024) - Alvernia University (2-2) was down 2-1 after three sets to Penn State Harrisburg (3-1) but came roaring back and took the final two sets of the match to secure the 3-2 victory in non-conference women's volleyball action Tuesday night on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

The Golden Wolves dropped the first set 25-17 but came back to tie the match at one with a 25-22 victory in set two before dropping the third set 25-23. The Golden Wolves then ripped off a 25-23 win in the fourth set and then took the deciding set 15-11 to secure the comeback and take down the Lions Alvernia's home opener. 

How it Happened 
  • The Lions came out hot, scoring ten of the first 13 points to grab a commanding 10-3 lead in the first set. 
  • The Golden Wolves grabbed back to back points to make it a five point game but PSU Harrisburg then tallied nine of the next 17 points to push the lead to 19-13. Kayleigh Kehler, Hailey McDevitt and Julianna McGlone all recorded kills for Alvernia. 
  • The Lions then scored six of the final ten points to secure the first set 25-17. 
  • Alvernia and PSU Harrisburg traded points back and forth to start the second set with the Lions holding a slim 8-6 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves then tallied four straight points to grab a two point, 10-8 lead. 
  • The Lions responded with a scoring run of their own, this one a 7-3 scoring run that flipped the lead in their favor, 15-13 midway through the second set. 
  • Alvernia turned around and tied the set after scoring five of the next eight to make it a 18-18 game. 
  • The Golden Wolves would end the second set on a 7-4 scoring run with Cierra Roberts, Allie Evangelista and McGlone all recording kills for Alvernia during the run as they evened the match at one thanks to the 25-22 victory in the second set. 
  • Alvernia kept the momentum going in the third set, jumping out to a three point, 8-5 lead early. Roberts, Kehler and Jamie Pierce all hammered home kills for the Golden Wolves. 
  • Alvernia would weather a 5-4 PSU Harrisburg scoring run to maintain a two point, 12-10 lead. 
  • The Lions then tied the game after scoring six of the next ten points to make it a 16-16 game heading into the end of the third set. 
  • Alvernia would then grab the next three points to make it 19-16 but the Lions responded with a 9-4 run to end the third set and take a 2-1 lead in the match after a 25-23 victory in set three. 
  • The Golden Wolves bounced right back in the fourth set as they jumped out to an early 9-4 lead to start the set. Olivia Rohrbaugh recorded two kills during the run and Evangelista and McGlone both tallied one as well. 
  • PSU Harrisburg responded with a 7-2 scoring run that leveled the score at 11 but Alvernia hit right back with nine of the next 12 points to regain the lead, 20-14 heading into the final five points of the set. 
  • Penn State Harrisburg would score nine of the final 14 points of the set but it was not enough as the Golden Wolves grabbed set four 25-23 and sent the match to the fifth set to decide the match. 
  • Alvernia hopped out to another quick lead, this one a 10-3 lead in the deciding set to put pressure on the Lions. McGlone and McDevitt both recorded kills for Alvernia during the run. 
  • PSU Harrisburg responded with a 7-4 scoring run of their own that cut the Alvernia lead to just four, 10-14 but the Golden Wolves were knocking on the door. 
  • The Lions would tally another point to make it 14-11 but Patricia Falar assisted McGlone who hammered down the match winning kill to secure the 15-11 victory in the fifth set and complete the five set comeback over the Lions.

Inside the Box Score 
  • Kayleigh Kehler led Alvernia with nine kills off of 43 attacks. She also led Alvernia with 19 digs and two solo blocks.
  • Hailey McDevitt had seven kills on 32 attacks and did not record an error. She also led Alvernia with 15 assists.
  • Allie Evangelista finished with three assisted blocks, as well as five kills off of 19 attacks.
  • Jamie Pierce led Alvernia with four service aces.
