Golden Wolves Sweep Lions in Straight Sets

Reading, Pa (September 5, 2024) - Alvernia University (3-2) took all three sets against Penn State Berks (0-1) en route to a 3-0 sweep of the Lions Thursday night in a non-conference women's volleyball matchup on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.

The Golden Wolves dominated the first set, 25-5 and then took set two by a score of 25-21 and then grabbed the third set, 25-19 to secure the sweep of the Lions.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves dominated the first set after trailing 2-0 early. A kill from Olivia Rohrbaugh put Alvernia on the board in the first set before a run of 11 points off the serve of Julianna McGlone gave Alvernia the 12-2 lead. Kayleigh Kehler led Alvernia during the run with three kills, and McGlone served three aces.
  • After giving up three points to the Lions to end the run, Alvernia utilized an attack error by Penn State Berks to spark another run. This time the Golden Wolves scored 12 straight points off the serve of Abigail McGliney to secure the set, 25-5, in dominating fashion. Kehler added three more kills during the run and finished the first set with six kills.
  • Penn State Berks again took the early lead, 3-0, in the second set. But, a block by Allison Wolf put the Golden Wolves on the board in the second frame.
  • Later in the second set, the Lions still held the lead, 12-8, following a Penn State kill. But, a kill from Wolf followed by a block from Lindsay Ferguson and Hailey McDevitt brought Alvernia within two, 12-10. After some back and forth, Alvernia tied the set at 13-13 on an ace from Wolf.
  • Alvernia tied it again at 15-15 before taking the lead for good in the second frame on a Cierra Roberts kill to make it 16-15. Alvernia held off the Lions the rest of the set and a kill from Ferguson gave Alvernia its 25th point as Alvernia took the set, 25-21, and the match lead, 2-0.
  • The Golden Wolves made quick work of the third set, taking an early 7-0 lead off the leadoff serve of Patricia Falar, who had three aces on the serving run.
  • The Lions threatened later in the set, closing Alvernia's lead down to two, 12-10, but a Falar kill and a Penn State attack error gave Alvernia back some breathing room, 14-10.
  • The Lions got within three, 21-18, as Alvernia worked to close out the set and the match. But, kills from Olivia Rohrbaugh and Falar brought Alvernia to match point. Roberts then closed out the match with a kill off the set of McDevitt to secure the 25-19 set win and 3-0 sweep of the Lions.
